What is Quellin Carprofen - Generic to Rimadyl?

Quellin is the first soft chewable formulation of carprofen (generic form of Rimadyl) which can make giving your pet's pain medication simple and easy. Each chewable is scored for effortless dosing and dogs love the meat flavor, so there's no need to hide the medication inside food or treats. Quellin requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (over six weeks of age)

Benefits:
  • Savory meat flavor and soft chewable tablet dogs take as a treat
  • Chewable tablet is scored for easy dosing
  • Can be given with or without food
How it Works:

Quellin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that relieves pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis or recent surgery to improve your dog's mobility. In most dogs, improvement can be seen in a few days.

Cautions:

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children. Not for human use. Consult a physician in cases of accidental ingestion by humans. For use in dogs only. Do not use in cats. All dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before initiation of NSAID therapy. Appropriate laboratory tests to establish hematological and serum biochemical baseline data prior to, and periodically during, administration of any NSAID should be considered.

Brand Name:

Quellin (Bayer)

Generic Name
:

Carprofen

What is Quellin:

Quellin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce pain and inflammation due to osteoarthritis and pain following surgery in dogs. Quellin is a prescription drug for dogs. It is available in a soft chewable tablet and is given to dogs by mouth.

How is Quellin administered:

Quellin should be given according to your veterinarian's instructions. Your veterinarian will tell you what amount of Quellin is right for your dog and how long it should be given. Most dogs will take Quellin soft chewable tablets right out of your hand or the soft chewable tablet can be placed in the mouth. Quellin may be given with or without food.

Can Quellin be given with other medications?

Quellin should not be given with other NSAIDs (for example, aspirin, deracoxib, etodolac, firocoxib, meloxicam, tepoxalin) or steroids (for example, cortisone, dexamethasone, prednisone, triamcinolone). Tell your veterinarian about all medicines you have given your dog in the past, and any medicines that you are planning to give with Quellin. This should include other medicines that you can get without a prescription. Your veterinarian may want to check that all of your dog's medicines can be given together.

What special precautions are there:

Quellin should be given to dogs only. Cats should not be given Quellin. Call your veterinarian immediately if your cat receives Quellin. People should not take Quellin. Keep Quellin and all medicines out of reach of children. Call your physician immediately if you accidentally take Quellin.

What are the possible side effects that may occur in my dog during Quellin therapy?

Quellin, like other drugs, may cause some side effects. Serious but rare side effects have been reported in dogs taking NSAIDs, including Quellin. Serious side effects can occur with or without warning and in rare situations result in death. The most common NSAID-related side effects generally involve the stomach (such as bleeding ulcers), and liver or kidney problems.

Look for the following side effects that can indicate your dog may be having a problem with Quellin or may have another medical problem: decrease or increase in appetite; change in bowel movements (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools); change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, incoordination, seizure or aggression); yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice); change in drinking habits (frequency, amount consumed); change in urination habits (frequency, color, or smell); change in skin (redness, scabs, or scratching). It is important to stop therapy and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog has a medical problem or side effect from Quellin therapy. If you have additional questions about possible side effects, talk to your veterinarian.

How should I store this product:

Keep Quellin soft chewable tablets in a secured storage area out of the reach of your dog and other pets. If your dog ingests more than your veterinarian prescribed, of if your other pets take Quellin soft chewable tablets, contact your veterinarian right away.

Quellin Carprofen - Generic to Rimadyl is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So glad there is finally a great tasting alternative to Rimadyl. My dog loves the taste and no difference in pain relief.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Alternative When my husband was ill, Nugget sat on the couch with him. She gained LOTS of weight and that caused knee and joint problems. Nugget had been on Rimadyl forever, and it helped. Quellin is even better. Nugget is down from 34 to 24 lbs. Moving is easier and more fun for her. I had to crush the Rimadyl, but Nugget likes the Quellin flavor. I give it with her food, and she eats every morsel. We'll stick with this medication. Thanks for suggesting it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! My young dog has blown out both her back ACL's and needs double knee surgery. The cost of the surgery is $5000 so while we are saving to have the surgery in the fall, we are keeping her on this medicine and the doctor also prescribed pain meds for her bad days. Since she started this medicine we no longer have to give her pain medication. I highly recommend this product. She is still sprinting across the yard like nothing is wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These work VERY well for my girl. Her legs were very stiff and she couldn't hardly get up off the floor, but after just 2 days of these pills, she has that spunk back in her eye and moves around with no problems! She has even been jumping up on the bed again!! Love that these pills work so wonderfully!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the same as Rimadyl I ordered this generic version of Rimadyl chewables because of the price. However, these chewables do not taste the same (apparently) as the Rimadyl and my old girl won't touch them... even smothered in peanut butter, she won't go near them. I tried pill pockets too. She usually loves those with her other plain pills. But no go... she won't go near them. So while I can't attest to their effectiveness in comparison to Rimadyl, the convenience of a chewable is definitely lost here. My dog likes the Rimadyl and thinks its a treat. Not with this generic brand though. Not worth the $13 savings. I am sending back and getting the real thing. NOTE: 1800PetMeds could not have been nicer or more helpful with the return of these pills. I will be a regular customer now, for sure. Thank you.

Q&A

What enzyme does this block,i.e. how does it work

Asked by: skeeter
Carprofen reduces inflammation by inhibition of COX-2 and other sources of inflammatory prostaglandins. This is targeted protection, in that it does not interfere with COX-1 activity.
