What is Clavamox?
Clavamox is a broad spectrum antibiotic, a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic Acid, used for infections caused by bacteria. Clavamox requires a prescription from your veterinarian, and is sold by the tablet. It is also available as oral drops.

How it Works:

What is Clavamox:
Clavamox is a broad spectrum antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Clavamox is a prescription medication available in four different strength tablets - 62.5mg, 125mg, 250mg, and 375mg. Clavamox is also available as drops. When mixed with 14 ml of water, each ml contains 62.5mg of Clavamox. The usual dose of Clavamox in dogs is 6.25mg/pound twice a day, and in cats it is 62.5mg (1 ml) twice a day. Clavamox can be used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as respiratory, ear, urinary tract, and skin. Clavamox may also be used for purposes other than those listed.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Clavamox to my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to another penicillin or to a cephalosporin. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver or kidney disease. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating or if your pet could become pregnant during treatment.
How should this medication be given:
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Clavamox should be given with food. Keep water available for your pet. Give all of the Clavamox even if your pet appears to be better. Symptoms may improve before the infection is completely treated. Store tablets at room temperature. Store the drops in the refrigerator. Discard any unused drops after 10 days.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.
What happens if I overdose the pet:
Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of Clavamox overdose may include nausea, vomiting, rash, drowsiness, hyperactivity, or kidney problems.
What should I avoid while giving Clavamox to my pet:
There are no restrictions on food or activity during treatment with Clavamox unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.
What are the possible side effects of Clavamox:
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet experiences diarrhea that is severe and lasts longer than 3 days. Stop giving Clavamox and seek emergency veterinary medical care in the event of an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; hives; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; rash; or fainting) Other less serious side effects such as mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or yeast or fungal infection may be more likely to occur. Continue to give Clavamox and notify your veterinarian if these symptoms occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.
What other drugs will affect Clavamox:
Before giving Clavamox, tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given another antibiotic (for the same or a different infection), allopurinol or probenecid. You may not be able to give Clavamox or you may need to have the dosage adjusted. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Clavamox. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.

Clavamox and stomach issues
I have three cocker spaniels and two of them tend to have bladder problems where they get something similar to bladder infections and they wet all over the place,. with one dose this medicine helps! It is cheaper through pet meds than at the vet......

amazing antibiotic!
I highly recommend this antibiotic to any one that has to absolutely-positively needs to rid their animal, <whether cat or dog>, of any nasty- "ooey-gooeyies." I had two experiences with this this pill. First, was for a major surgery for my tabby cat, Pippen, where he was recovering and on Clavamox for several weeks. I believe the quality of this rx, helped minimize down time for his recovery. He was back to normal in no time.
The second was for my elderly rescue, Chula, whom I inherited a lot of malnutrition problems, <due to prior neglect> Her tummy was a size of a basketball, which earned her the nickname " HeffeLump", Well after testing she was found to have severe liver infection and was 800 over 120, so in comes Clavamox. She has been on the pill fro appx 2 months and her tummy has gone down 3/4ths already. Clavamox is not he cheapest pill, at 0.89$++ per pill, but the first experience w Pip , made me go with it again. I highly recommend this pill. It is worth the extra$$$

I had gotten this from our vet and she had to use it three times and still didn't get rid of it. She has herpies. It also was cheaper at the vet 24.50 here it's 29.50 plus 9 dollars in shipping. I went back to the vet and she gave us Baytril and that seemed to work much better. It was liquid and chicken flavored here they have the tablets which is ok too and this is cheaper on here to get.

My cat is 11 years old and she was diagnosed with feline herpes when she was about 8 months old. Her symptoms include sneezing, with lots of mucous from her chronic sinusitis, and occasionally a slightly red eye. I've used many other antibiotics over the years but the Clavamox works the best. It doesn't completely rid her of symptoms but does clear it up about 80% for maybe a month when I have to repeat the cycle again. The vet said that she'll never really be cured so I guess that 80% is about as good as I'm going to get and I'm happy for that at least. She's so much happier after the treatment. As an aside, I have 2 cats, the 2nd one being a young Bengal and she has absolutely no symptoms so she hasn't contracted it from the little one. Seems as though her vaccinations are working!! Yea! I would strongly recommend Clavamox.

Maybe it is the Vet
Eddie had bronchitis in January and after three x-rays was given Baytril- two courses. Bill - $350.00. That seemed to take care of the bronchitis, but then he developed a sinus infection. He was prescribed another antibiotic (dont remember the name - $60.00) and then a course of 3/4 of 125 mg clavamox at @ $68.00. In early April the Vet suggested we culture the mucus. That was $300.00 and a temp antibiotic. Result is Clavamox should be the answer, but based on his weight maybe 1 & 1/2 125 mg (this time from pet meds at a more reasonable price). Seven days into this and his reverse sneezing is worse. The mucus is like rubber cement and he is miserable. Vet says a dental should fix the sinus infection. Hmm, Clavamox should work based on the culture, but will 14 days do the trick?

can this be given to a 2 week old puppy ?
puppy has mucus comin out of his nose for 3 days now,but he is eatin good & is in good health other than that mocus.
Amoxicillin, with or without clavulanic acid, is one of the very few antibiotics that is safe for use in very young pets. However, your veterinarian needs to prescribe this medication to make sure your puppy gets the proper dosage.

Cat missed 3 doses by vomiting etc - will she need 3 more doses?
My cat has been put on Clavamox for a UTI. She threw up twice after being given the medication and one time I missed her mouth and the dose went on the floor. I gave her another dose shortly after each of these times with no issues. My question is, will she need 3 more doses after the bottle is gone?
yes, tell your vet about it so they can arrange to get you 3 more tablets. ( or maybe a few more

color changed from white to orange
I took my cat into the vet yesterday & I took her liquid clavamox with her & I took it in white and was returned orange and when I called the person didn't seem knowledgeable so I am turning here to see if I get help. She also threw up which she has never done on this medication before and has had this many times, always white. Does this turn color if not refrigerated for 4 hours?
The orange color is not normal. Please contact your veterinarian right away.

What do i do if my cat gets clavamix that was never refrigerated?
My cat has been throwing up all day. The color of the med was different as well
It would not be recommended to use clavamox that has not been properly refrigerated. You should call your veterinarian about the vomiting as cats can become dehydrated very quickly.
