What is Ranitidine?
Ranitidine is an acid reducer that treats ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Ranitidine reduces stomach acid allowing for existing ulcers to heal, and may also prevent ulcers from forming. Ranitidine is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for dogs and cats. Dosing for small dogs?
My vet recommended an H2 blocker for my 8-lb dog. But the smallest dose available is a 75-mg tablet. Even cut in half, the dose would be 4x the recommended dosing of 1mg per lb. Is it safe to give him so much?
Dissolve your tablets into cooled boiled water. In your case you want a solution with a strength of 8mg/ml for your 8 lb dog. So grind the tablet into powder by breaking it into small pieces then grind the pieces between two teaspoons into powder. Mix the powder with 9ml of the water which will give you 9 x 1ml doses of 8.33mg (for each tablet you use). Use a plastic syringe with a scale to measure the water to mix with the powder. Once you have the solution mixed keep it in a small medicine bottle with a screw top so that you can shake it before use. Draw 1 ml of the solution into the syringe and squirt it into dogs' mouth. Hope this makes sense.
