What is Ciprofloxacin:
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the urinary tract, skin, respiratory tract, and wound infections due to susceptible organisms. This medication may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Ciprofloxacin to my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has had epilepsy or seizures, or has joint problems or kidney disease. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.
What is the most important information I should know about Ciprofloxacin:
Ciprofloxacin is a prescription medication that is not FDA-approved for veterinary use.
How should this medication be given:
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Give all of the medication your veterinarian has prescribed. Symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Ciprofloxacin can be given with or without food, but should be given at the same time every day. Allow plenty of water for your pet to drink. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Ciprofloxacin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and give only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What other drugs will affect Ciprofloxacin:
Before giving Ciprofloxacin, tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given warfarin, theophylline, probenecid, insulin or oral diabetes medication such as Glipizide, an NSAID such as carprofen, Deramaxx or other, Phenytoin or cyclosporine modified. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Ciprofloxacin. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Directions:
- Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat infections in animals caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Do not give Ciprofloxacin to any pet other than the pet for whom it was prescribed.
- Do not give to puppies younger than 28 weeks of age.
Tip:
Do not give Ciprofloxacin with vitamin/mineral products.

Are there contradictions with cipro and ace inhibitors?
Human models recommended not using fluoroquinolone classes which is this medication with ace inhibitors such as enalapril. The combination of these drugs causes hyperkalmia, then sudden death within a week in specific people. Can cipro and ace inhibitors cause ill or death in pets too? What dosages are safe if given to a cat or dog if they are taking an ace inhibitor? Giving this medication to children is done with caution too. Cats and dogs are so small like children. If a cat or dog has an undiagnosed kidney disease with BUN/CRE levels appearing normal, how would taking cipro affect these pets? Can cipro elevate BUN/CRE or could the cat or dog become hyperkalmia?
Although there have been some published studies regarding the risks of usage of certain fluroquinolone antibiotics and ace inhibitors, there is no established drug interaction between these two medications. Please be sure to contact your vet regarding potential risks for your pet if they are on these two medications. Your vet will be able to evaluate the risk vs benefit for your pet and help chose the most appropriate treatment therapy for your pet's condition. Any pet taking an ace inhibitor should have their potassium levels monitored periodically. Also, if a pet does have renal impairment, the dose of the cipro may be lowered and adjusted appropriately.

Cipro dosage for 40 lb. dog?
A stray collie showed up at my neighbors with what looks like a severe skin infection from flea allergy as well as an obvious uti. She weighs approx. 40 lbs. He doesn't have the funds to take this dog to the vet at the moment. I have Cipro 250mg as well as 500mg that I could give him to treat the dog with. What would be the best dosage in your opinion?

1/4 of a 250mg tablet every 12 hours. The product does come in a liquid form, however we
do not carry it. If your vet gives the approval, the 250mg tablet can be cut carefully with a pill
