Diphenhydramine is a non-prescription (OTC) product available as 25mg tablets and 50mg capsules.
How this medicine should be used:
Oral diphenhydramine is not FDA-approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs and cats. The usual dose in dogs and cats is 0.5-2mg/pound every 8-12 hours. The slow release capsule should not be mixed or dissolved in food. Do not give sinus or cold medicines containing diphenhydramine to your pet.
What are the side effects:
Side effects of diphenhydramine include drowsiness, dry mouth and urinary retention. Rarely, vomiting and diarrhea can occur.
What special precautions are there:
Do not use this medication in animals that are allergic to it or other antihistamines. Do not use in animals with glaucoma, prostate disease, urinary obstruction, and high blood pressure. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Use with caution when given with other CNS (central nervous system)-depressant drugs such as tranquilizers or barbiturates. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking.
In the event of an overdose:
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose can include seizures, extreme drowsiness, coma, respiratory depression, and death.
How should I store this medication:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store this medication at room temperature, away from excess heat, light, and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep medication away from children and pets.

It does the job.
This product does seem to help relieve the allergy problems my dog was having and it does calm him down and makes him a little sleepy. I don't like the capsules though, I have to open them and put the powder in a spoon with a little water to give them to him, he is wise to all the other tricks. All in all, I would purchased this product again.

For cats, place it far back in throat
Giving Benadryl to my dogs has always been easy---just hide it in a spoon of peanut butter, and it's gone down the hatch, easy peasy. But cats don't believe in gulping down a glob of peanut butter, and Benadryl apparently tastes pretty horrendous to a cat. After some trial and error, I have deduced that it is taste-induced nausea which leads to vomiting (and of course the foaming).
So I experienced the same thing as many of the other cat owners here when giving Benadryl---the result is lots of foaming and vomiting. I switched to Zyrtec, since it doesn't seem to taste as bad to a cat, but after Zyrtec failed to help with her symptoms, and by this time having had lots of practice pilling my cat, I decided to give Benadryl another try.
I have found that I CAN dose my cat with Benadryl without making her sick. The trick is to place the pill far back in the throat. With the cat's head back and the mouth open, drop the pill in---aiming for the back of the throat---while trying to avoid the tongue altogether. If it lands on the tongue (even the back part) rather than in the throat, quickly push the pill back with a finger. Getting it as far back as possible without ever hitting the tongue keeps the cat from being able to eject the pill back up into the mouth, and thus never tastes the pill.
Now that I am preventing her from tasting the Benadryl, there has been no more vomiting, no more foaming, and best of all, no more chewiing off her fur and sneezing fits (at least so far).

very effective
Buster takes one 50mg pill before bed. His sleep cycle had been disturbed but he now sleeps his regular hours and is more active when he wakes up. If I notice his breathing during the day indicates some congestion when the wind is blowing dust and pollen around, one pill relieves it within 30 minutes. His vet has examined him and agrees he has occasional allergies and diphenhydramine is the perfect solution.

Not as Effective As I Thought!
When I purchased this product, I was hoping for it to be a little more effective. It really hasn't helped with his constant itching, but it stopped my dog from constantly biting on his paws. It does somewhat have a calming effect on him though, and I find that they help him sleep.

We started to give Lily the pills about two weeks ago and she is much better now. She was constantly sneezing. Now it is only occasionally. Appeared to work. Didn't do anything for her itching and scratching. Will work on that one

Disappointed with effectiveness
My lab mix has terrible skin allergies and her vet suggested giving her generic Benadryl. It worked marginally for awhile and then it eventually didn't seem to help. I was hoping this product was stronger or different from Benadryl, but it is not. It has exactly the same ingredients and dosage as the Benadryl. It was a waste of my money.

Generic Benadryl
ROCK, my (Pitbull) has allergy issues. He is given his antihistamine every moring and he is feeling so much bettet. The runny nose, itching and over all allergy discomfort is 100% better. I highly recommend this product.

You may give 0.5 - 2mg per lb of pets body weight every 8 -12 hours. Since your furry baby is 106 lbs, you may want to go with the 50 mg capsules. You can give as little as one capsule and up to 4 capsules every 8-12 hours.

Hi there, You would give it as needed every 8-12 hours however if your Furry Friend has a certain condition then this is a question you would need to consult your vet to get the proper advice. Your vet would be the only one qualified (and know your pets history) to give you the correct answer your looking for.

Need helping changing our dogs sleeping location.
We need to transition our 9 year old 15lb bichon from sleeping in our bed to sleeping in a kennel as my husband has developed sleep apnea and the dr says no pets in the bed. Our fur baby is kennel trained and stays in it quite happily while we are away. At night he gladly goes in it but once the lights are out he crys and and scratches at the kennel door for hours and will not sleep. Would giving him Benadryl for a few nights help him to relax and get some sleep?
yes that would be fine to do. Start with 1/2 tablet of the 25 mg diphenhydramine and see how
he responds to that. If you need to increase the dose you can go up to 1 full 25 mg tablet.
Hopefully soon, he will get used to the kennel as his little space where he can relax and get some

I have a 10 pound bichon poodle mix who is very anxious when groomed. What dose of benadryl would be appropriate to help calm her?
You can give her 1/2 of the diphenhydramine 25 mg tablet . Try giving it to her about 45 minutes
before going to the groomers. Best of Luck.

My 14 yo Corgi is sometimes very restless at night, pacing and barking but not getting much sleep. Can I give him Benadryl 50mg to relax him?
You could try giving him Benadryl, but the dose depends on the weight of your pet.
The normal dose is: 0.5 - 2mg per lb of pets body weight every 8 -12 hours.

Taking a 15 hour drive to move with my 10lb Pom, will this product work for him?
I will be moving soon, and its a 15 hour drive to our new home, my pom gets very nervous, anxiety, nausea, and just starts drooling/pacing within about 30 minutes of being in the car. Hes done it since hes been a baby and is almost 3 now. Will this help as a sedative to calm these issues even make him a little sleepy for the drive?

Yes give it to him 20 minutes before you leave in the car and it will calm him right down I promise. My dogs do great on this drug. It calms them in storms, allergies, traveling etc. They just lay down and go to sleep in the car. Hope this helps!

Dose for dogs 15-21 lbs
I have 3 small dogs weighing between 15-21lbs, all with allergies. I buy the 25m tablets. Right now I give each one 1/2 tablet 2x per day. Is that enough? Sometimes the dose seems to work, sometimes not.
Give each one of them 1 full tablet every 8 hours and they should do fine. I have been giving it to my dog Maggie for years and she does really well on it.
