What is Cholodin?
Cholodin is a chewable dietary supplement that helps remedy various conditions in senior dogs. It has been recommended by veterinarians for age-related problems, including fatigue, poor coat, constipation, inappropriate urination, poor appetite, and poor mental performance.

How this product should be used:
For small dogs (25 lbs or less) give ½ tablet. For medium dogs (25-50 lbs) give 1 tablet. For large dogs (over 50 lbs) give 2 tablets. Tablets may be fed by hand or crumbled and mixed with food.
What are the side effects:
Infrequently, animals on a choline loading regimen will show signs of increased neurological activity such as hyperactivity, social agitation, muscular twitching, etc. If these responses are noticed, cessation of tablet administration will quickly result in disappearance of these irregularities. After a period of 3 or 4 days the animal may resume the same dosage, usually with no adverse reaction.

I purchased this product in early January in the hopes of helping my very senior dachshund with her canine equivalent to Alzheimer's. In all fairness, this supplement does work and I saw definite response within about 48 hours. However, I ended up euthanizing her after she had only been on it for two weeks (unrelated problem) so my experience with it is somewhat limited.
Where I did see almost immediate improvement was in her alertness. At nearly 17, nothing was going to reverse her problems completely, but that symptom did show quite dramatic improvement almost overnight. Within the two weeks that she was on the supplement, I saw improvements in panic attacks and awareness of her surroundings. Her physical symptoms improved, too, though in all fairness, the supplement might have done more good there if she had not been suffering from the results of a spinal stroke she had had two and a half years ago. I didn't see a lot of incontinence improvements, but again, her physical issues may have been the culprit there. What I didn't see a response was in the sleep/wake patterns and the vocalization that generally accompanies those problems. Again, though, she was only on the supplement for two weeks, so that might take more time.
All in all, I'd say I saw a moderate positive response to most of the symptoms this supplement is meant to address. Again, nothing was going to reverse 17 years of aging, but if you have a dog who is beginning to show (or as in my dog's case, is well on the way) the "Old Dog Syndrome", this is definitely something to try. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that a 20 lb dog is going to generally get 1/2 a pill a day. You might want to keep that in mind if you're ordering a bottle to "try."
Fast forward 7 years from the 2009 review.
Since my review, my husband and I began fostering nothing but senior dogs, and this product has become a staple on my "dog shelf." I have now used it on at least a half dozen seniors, and I've seen marked improvement in each dog. Keep in mind that each dog will show improvement to a different degree on different things. The two areas I've seen the most consistent improvement on is in eating and the neurological areas...circling, confusion, lost in corners.
I've also experienced a couple of the negative side effects the manufacturer talks about, but after taking them off the supplement for a few days and then returning them to it, the side effect disappears (usually some form of vocalization or mild anxiety).
Cholodin is my default go to when I start seeing difficulty in my seniors. In a couple of cases, I've used it as a dog has begun to go blind, and this has helped them through the initial trauma of losing their sight; something that can be very helpful for a lot of dogs. it's also my first go to when I see some of the beginnings of senior dog dementia.
As I said in my 2009 review, this isn't a miracle drug. Some animals benefit from it more than others (I've had one that benefited, but still needed more help from a prescription drug), and all of them to varying degrees. If you have a dog under 25 lbs, you have 1/2 a tablet per day, and that 50 tablet bottle is well worth the price to see if your dog will improve. And generally I begin to see improvement by the third day; and by the third week, I know I've gotten about as much as I'm going to get from it, which is hugely helpful.
I'm changing this from 4 to 5 stars, and I highly recommend giving Cholodin a try if you have an older dog who is beginning to have difficulties.

Very effective
My small rat terrier is 16 years old. She would often walk around the house as if she was lost or confused & then stop & stare off into space. Sometimes she would just squat & potty on the floor, not even asking to go outside. After she took Cholodin for approximately 2 or maybe 3 months her behavior improved. She no longer seems to be confused & she doesn't stare off into space anymore. I don't know if it helped her pottying on the floor issue because I watch her closer, taking her out right away after playing & eating.

Saved his life!
20 months ago my husband and I were confronted with the decision to put our beloved 12 yr old Cocker down. His "doggie dementia" was so bad that he trembled with anxiety and fear, got lost in corners, and had a blank stare of complete unrecognition. Our vet gave us several prescriptions to try, but nothing worked and the cost was really high. Out of desperation, I searched the internet and found Cholodin. Within 4 days the improvement was very noticeable, and a week after that he was nearly normal. We will never be without this great product. Thanks for the gift of his well being.

Putting Our Lab Back on this
I started giving our 11 year old female lab this product last year when she started having cognitive issues (not sleeping, standing in corners) and it seemed to make a big difference. My husband thought it was a waste of money so he had me stop for a few months. She got much worse off the cholodin and started having severe separation anxiety as well. I can't wait to get her back on this to PROVE to my husband it really made a huge difference. This works great for our old female lab.

Didn't make a differnce
I gave this to my elderly male min. poodle and did not make a difference, now I have a elderly female Aussie and again no difference. Why? I am giving her the dosage my Vet. wrote on the script.

This product changed our lives
I can't believe what a difference Cholodin made in or Whippet. Once a sweet loving dog she became very aggressive and nervous and had to be muzzled at all times. After only 2 weeks we noticed her becoming calmer. She has been on the supplement for several months and is no longer aggressive at all. She is now agian the sweet dog we thought we had lost forever. So glad I found and tried this product!

This supplement has helped the doggie dementia
This supplement has helped the doggie dementia for our 13 year old Brittany spaniel.
Before our dog would growl at my husband like he was a stranger, and when he would go outside he would just stand there and stare like he forgot why he went outside. Now he recognizes my husband, and when he goes outside he acts like he knows where he is, and why he is there. Our dog even eats this tablet like it’s a treat, so we don’t have to hide it in his food.

what drugs can you mix with the cholodin
can you mix theophyline and prednisone withe the cholodin .
When you are taking any prescription medications you would need to ask your vet about any supplements you are going to use. He would know your Furry Child the best and would be able to provide the correct medical answer your looking for.

My 14 year old Boston Terrier has shown significant improvment with joint problems from taking a multi vitamin glucosamine suppliment.

Preventative?
I have a 10 year old Rottie who is still very sharp and does not have dementia of any sort,
but my question is should I start the rottie on it as a preventative, or wait until she really needs it? (I recently ordered some for my 14 y.o. lab who has anxiety.)

Use in conjunction with Denamarin
My 14.5 year old jack Russell has been on Denamarin for over a year and it has helped his liver values to decline. He recently is showing some signs of dementia and has inappropriately peed in the house twice, not even looking for the door.
I am wondering if I can use this product and also the Denamarin at the same time since they both help the liver. Thanks

Is Cholodin safe for cats?
I have a 9 year old cat that takes metacam-.1 oz once a week and I sprinkle glucosamine on her wet food in the am. I am wanting to find something that is safe for her and that might help her a little better, she still limps and is stiff when she gets up to walk. I was looking for something natural that wont hurt any of her organs or digestive or nervous system?

My 15 yr old dog is on metacam, glycan aid-ha, and she is on a low dose of Baytril (1/2 68)to ward off future UTI's. She weighs 30lbs
