What is Adequan?
Adequan Canine (for dogs) is used to control symptoms associated with degenerative or traumatic arthritis. Adequan requires a prescription from your veterinarian. A syringe is needed, but not included in the package. Please see 3cc (3ml) luer lock syringe with 3/4" 25 g Needle.

How it Works:
Adequan inhibits enzymes that break down cartilage within your dog's joints. It reduces inflammation and increases the thickness of joint (synovial) fluid.
Cautions:
Do not give this medication to breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals. Use with caution in animals with kidney or liver disease, or bleeding disorders.

What is Adequan:
Adequan belongs to a unique class of drugs called Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritis Drugs (DMOAD). It is an injectable polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) and is the only FDA approved product of its type. Adequan has been clinically shown to help treat the disease while giving relief from pain. It modifies the disease cycle, stimulates cartilage repair processes and diminishes joint damage while reducing the pain caused by osteoarthritis.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Adequan:
Tell your veterinarian if your dog has any known or suspected bleeding disorders. Tell your veterinarian if your dog has any liver or kidney disease. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is breeding, pregnant or lactating.
How should this medication be given:
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Adequan is given by intramuscular (IM, into the muscle) injection. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. Store Adequan at room temperature (64°-77° F). Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What should I avoid while giving Adequan:
Do not give this medication to breeding, pregnant or lactating animals. Use with caution in animals with kidney or liver disease, or blood clotting or coagulation disorders.
What are the possible side effects of Adequan:
Few side effects are seen following Intramuscular injection. Stop giving Adequan and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if an allergic reaction (facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma) should occur. Bleeding from the nose, blood in the feces, or dark and tarry stools may indicate a decreased ability of blood to clot. Contact your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effects that seem unusual or bothersome to the animal.
What other drugs will affect Adequan:
Consult your veterinarian before using any other prescription or over the counter medicines including vitamins and supplements.

Bought us some time.
Our Shepherd is in terrible shape with arthritis and hip dysplasia. We were ready to put her down. Then we heard about Adequan. Our 12 yr old is still not in the best of shape but much better than what she was and also not in the pain she was in. I truly believe this drug has given us at least another year with our baby maybe even more.

I believe it has helped...
My german shepherd was tearing her ACL's on both knees when our vet suggested we try this drug. Yes its expensive when you first try it because you have to get 4 weeks at first but now its only once a month. Our german shepherd is going to be 11 yrs old in April and we have noticed a difference but we know that when its icy out we take her out on a leash even though we have a fenced in yard because we don't want her to hurt herself. She is our baby and you take care of your baby. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old she has birth defects in which this adequan maybe helping her because she has one paw that is 2 inches shorter gives the joints a little more wear and tear.

Magic!
I've been giving my 10 year old 80lb Rottweiler, Brandy Adequan shots once a month for about a year now. This is the only product that makes her like a puppy again. She suffers from hip dysplasia and arthritis, but after the Adequan, she trots along with ease.

My dog has arthritis in her front elbows. After a few weeks I noticed a significant reduction in her pain level coupled with a marked improvement in her mobility. Also, she is able to play again. Adequan has definitely improved the quality of her life. She just came back from an hour long hike including some swimming and is expecting me to play fetch with her. Such a change!

Adequan is amazing!
Our 10-year-old German Shepherd/Akita mix started having extreme difficulty getting up and limping became a daily occurrence. He was otherwise very healthy. Our vet started him on Adequan. It took over a month of concentrated shots, twice a week, building the medication up in his system. Pretty soon we began to see dramatic results. Duke now seems as good as new! He acts like a pup on his daily walk with his dad. We give him a shot every three weeks for maintenance. That seems to be the time frame that works the best for him. It seems that so few things in life really deliver the results you hope. Adequan did...it truly seems like a miracle drug for Duke, our buddy boo!

after two injections there are no evident improvements yet. maybe it is too early to tell. we will try a few more shots for our 11 1/2 year old Boxer with arthritis.

Works like a miracle
My 4-1/2 yr. old pit mix recently was diagnosed with various arthritis in every joint of her body. She limped and could barely walk. My vet recommended Adequan. After getting injections twice a week for 3 weeks she improved dramatically. She now gets one injection a week and walks and runs without limping at all. She is back to going on two walks a day and enjoying them again!!

How often can Cosequan injections be repeated for dogs
I gave Cosequan injection to my dog about a year ago but he is now progressively getting worse with DJD and probable hip dysplasia.
How often can the doses be repeated after the 4 weei regiman.

Adequan and Novox
Small dog has been taking 25 mg carprofen (Novox) once a day. Today, the vet wants to start .25mg Adequan twice a week for four weeks and then once every two to four weeks after that. Is it safe to give the carprofen daily while give twice weekly shots of Adequan?
There is no known drug interaction between these 2 medications. Talk to your veterinarian if using both are appropriate for your pet.

what if im a Canadian and want to buy adequan and some heartworm meds.? do you accept a Canadian vets info I provide ,do you call or notify him? what if he wont ok it for some reason. im sure the vet here would not give the script if they are getting $49.00 for 1 shot,of 1cc of adequan.i would like to buy it for sure when I can get 100 cc bottle for $149.00 before dec.14. do you have other way of me getting this in this case??

Can I use Adequan with Rimadyl and Dasuquin w/ msm?
My 90 pound Rottweiler is receiving Adequan injections and has also been prescribed Rimadyl and Dasuquin to be taken daily. Eventually I will use the Rimadyl PRN as needed, but continue the Dasuquin on a daily basis.

So confused.
I use adequan on my horse and it is a miracle worker. With the canine (my dog is 90lbs.) to start is it once a week for 6 weeks, than 1 injection a month?
I have a young 90 pound Rottweiler who recently had bilateral elbow surgery related to arthritis. The Rehab Vet is administering Adequan IM twice a week for one month and then my Rottweiler will be receiving the medication SQ once a week for life.

The directions say to inject into the muscle, my vet has me pull up her neck scruff and inject it in, is it as effective this way?
My young Rottweiler recently had bilateral elbow surgery and is in rehab. The rehab Vet is administering the medication IM into her thigh muscle twice a week for one month and then she will be receiving the medication once a week SQ for life. The scruff of the neck in which you are referencing is SQ. The Vet noted that the IM injection causes discomfort, but is necessary when initiating the medication and stated SQ administration causes minor discomfort if any.

Can I give Metacam while administering Adequan? I have a 5 lb Maltese.

Where to apply needle?
If a dog weighs 103lbs. how many treatments will I get out of this product?
I read that some get 6 treatments . How do you know how much to give and where do you insert the needle in the animal? Is this a monthly injection after a few weeks of injections?
About 6 treatments is correct, the Adequan I purchased came in two 5 ml bottles & my 90 lb dog was prescribed 1.5 ml per injection - which comes out to about 7. Because Adequan is prescription only you would need to see the Vet, who will give you the dosage-my Vet taught me how to give the injection, so I would inquire if your Vet will do this before making an appointment. The injection is monthly after the first few weeks. This drug was the best arthritic medication I ever used for my dogs.
