What is Hydroxyzine Pamoate?

What is the most important information I should know about hydroxyzine:
Hydroxyzine pamoate (generic for Vistaril) is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs and cats. Hydroxyzine pamoate is available as 25mg and 50mg capsules. The usual dose of hydroxyzine in dogs is 1mg per pound every 6 to 8 hours. The usual dose in cats is 5 to 10 mg per cat every 8 to 12 hours. Hydroxyzine may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
How should this medication be given:
Follow the instructions on the prescription label. If you do not understand these directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store hydroxyzine at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What should I avoid while giving Hydroxyzine:
Hydroxyzine can cause drowsiness and dizziness.
What are the possible side effects of Hydroxyzine:
Seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences any signs of an allergic reaction (hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat). Keep giving Hydroxyzine and talk to your veterinarian if your pet develops any of these less serious side effects; dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion; blurred vision or dry mouth; nausea or vomiting. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome to your pet.

cough and itchy skin
Our dog has suffered from allergies for a long time. Vets have told us that is was kennel cough and gave us some powerful antibiotics. Did not help at all.After tireless efforts and no results we gave up until our neighbor recommended a vet he goes to.
He put our dog on this product and Omega 3 vitamins. Our dog is at peace now - his coughing is just about non exsistent and the scratching has stopped. This is the best treatment for our dog. He can live a better life. He is not bothered by any side effects.

Like many doxxies, my poor babies have seasonal allergies. This product has been helpful in toning them down. The boys sneeze less and, with the help of doggie shirts, Oscars summer rash is under control.

works well on itchy skin
This drug works pretty well for my dog's itchy skin. I found that it works much better when given with a fish oil supplement (omega 3 fatty acid pill). After about a month, I can see a huge difference in my dog's skin. She is not as itchy and her coat is much more silky. Her skin is not as red and her rashes have cleared up completely! I just hope it stays this way, although the vet did say that she will most likely be on this medication for the rest of her life. At least its quite inexpensive through 1-800-petmeds!

Can be helpful
All those with "allergic" dogs - please be aware that most dog foods have high carb content which promotes yeast which leads to itchiness, paw licking, red paws, irritation, ear infections, dull coat, hot spots - any or all of these things! So FIRST make sure that your dog is not consuming high carbs/low protein. You should generally be feeding your dog about 35% protein. Many popular and/or lowcost foods are only about 20-22%! Change over gradually (a week or two) and then most people notice improvement in about 4 weeks or so, and things will just get better from there! Organic dog food is NOT necessarily good. Protein content is very important, with carbs about 40% maximum. (Most better foods are NOT at the big box stores, by the way.)

Works wonders for calming
The vet gave us this due to our Dobie being nervous (had 4 different, terrible parents--starved & abused) when our schedules change or the weather gets windy, etc. They work sooo well for him. Sleeps peacefully yet on walks or at the dog park he plays & enjoys himself to the fullest. Would recommend for any "high strung" or abused or nervous pet.

now i can sleep
My 10 year old cocker spaniel seems to cough up a mucous not much during during the day from allergies but alot at night he is 50 pounds but i give him 25mg capsule and he almost quits coughing immediately thank god now i can sleep!

Helpful Relief
After using otc allergy medication, my vet changed me to Hydroxyzine. The first two weeks were like a miracle; after that Zoe became accustomed to it and began scratching and licking again, but it definitely does cut down on the amount of her itching. The sensitive skin shampoo and frequent baths also help. I have found that boredom also contributes to more licking.

Almost a success
I have a two year old Husky mix with airborne allergies, I used benadryl last year for her allergies but this year it wasn't working, her vet gave her hydroxyzine and it makes her more comfortable but doesn't completely relieve her of her itchiness.

We use the same medication that is approved for human consumption
In humans it is used also for allergy symptoms since it is an antihistamine as well
as for its anti-anxiety properties

red spots,biteting paws
can this drug be used for as long as the allergy persists.will it be harmful over a long period of time? i have two "Dogos" they weigh over a hundred ponds each.I give them one pill a day 50mg each they get drowsy but seem to be working,but i am concerned about the length of the treatment.
This medication has a history of being safe for long term use. The chances of serious side effects
or adverse reaction is very low.

Can I give Benadryl with hydroxyzine.
I have a 5month old Jack Rat and she has sever allergies.
She is taking 10 mg of hydroxyzine according to her weight and it is helping, but still has rashes and itching.
No. Both Benadryl and Hydroxyzine are anti-histamines. Your pet could experience severe side effects such as dry mouth, a rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure well as trouble urinating.
Please consult with your veterinarian to report your pet is still itching and has a rashes.

Hydroxzyzine & pregnancy
My dog was taking Hydroxzyzine 50mg 2 x a day- We bred her at the end of July, todate we can only assume she Is pregnant....I seen the warning and am wondering if Ipossible I've caused damage to pups possibily developing....I will stop giving her allergy med but now Im concerned, as she's been taking for the past three weeks in which she may have become pregnant

why is my do trembling
Are one of the side affect of Hydroxyzine or prednisolone trembling or shaking? He was givenprednisolone for ear infection and Hydroxyzine for his allergies I notice that after starting these medicatin he starts trembling like he is cold but the medication help his problems. Also his behaivor has changed he won't listen and he run away from me which he has neved done before.

Also, although it is rare, antihistamine overdose (hydroxyzine is an antihistamine) has been reported to cause tremors and seizures.
