What is Sulfasalazine?

How it Works:

Sulfasalazine is a prescription medication not FDA-approved for veterinary use; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for dogs and cats. Sulfasalazine is available as 500mg tablets. The usual dose for dogs is 10-15mg/pound every 8 hours. The usual dose in cats is 5-10mg/pound given once a day. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Do not give Sulfasalazine to any pet other than the pet for whom it was prescribed. Sulfasalazine is not for use in animals allergic to it or other sulfa drugs.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Sulfasalazine to my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to Sulfasalazine, a sulfa based antibiotic, or aspirin, a blockage in the intestines or urinary tract, porphyria, liver or kidney disease, or glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.
How should this medication be given:
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. The dose and duration of therapy will depend on the specific condition and the response to the medication. Give all of the medication your veterinarian has prescribed. Symptoms may start to improve before the condition is completely treated. Give Sulfasalazine by mouth. It may be given with food. Allow plenty of water for your pet to drink. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Sulfasalazine at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and give only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose the pet:
Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and seizures.
What should I avoid while giving Sulfasalazine to my pet:
There are no restrictions as to food or activity during treatment with Sulfasalazine unless your veterinarian directs otherwise.
What are the possible side effects of Sulfasalazine:
Stop giving the medication and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face, or hives); worsening colitis (fever, abdominal pain, cramping, or bloody diarrhea); sore throat; fever; or yellow eyes. Other less serious side effects may also occur. Continue to give the medication and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, a rash, itching or hives, fever, or KCS (dry eye). Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.
What other drugs will affect Sulfasalazine:
Sulfasalazine may decrease the absorption of digoxin. Sulfasalazine may also decrease the absorption of folate (folic acid). Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Sulfasalazine. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Can Sulfasalazine cause worse diarrea than the dog already has.
A rare adverse reaction is bloody/non-bloody diarrhea with Sulfasalazine. If your pet's condition has not improved or worsened notify your vet immediately.

Does sulfasalazine cause significant skin rash?
Rash begins as small red dot and progresses to larger darkened and scaly area with flaking and hair loss. Upon clearing, hair grows back and skin lightens.
Rash can be a side effect of sulfasalazine. It is recommended that you call your veterinarian about the rash because it is usually discontinued if a rash develops.

When my dog gets sick, the partially dissolved sulfasalzine creates a bright yellow carpet stain. Any removal ideas?

Sulfasalazine is not used to treat bladder infections. Due to the fact that your pet has blood in the urine I need to recommend that you have your pet examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible.

why no cat med?
why don't you carry sulfasalazine for cats.
500 mg. is for a dog. Cats only require
10-20 mgs dose.
The sulfasalazine that is commercially available is a 500mg tablet. The dose you state for a cat would need to be prepared by a compounding pharmacy.

My Minnie dachshund weighing 11.2 lbs. has seizures and takes 4mg of phenobarbital twice a day and she has colitis and needs to take Sulfasalazine(Azulfx) 3 times a day as needed. Is this dangerous for my little dog to take?
