What is Methigel Urinary Acidifier?
Methigel is a supplemental source of DL-Methionine and aids in maintaining a low urine pH. When combined with a proper diet, Methigel helps maintain a healthy, natural urinary tract.

How it Works:
Methigel's active ingredient is DL-Methionine, an amino acid that acidifies your pet's urine. Since bacteria don't thrive in an acid environment, this helps fight infections.
Cautions:
Methigel should not be given to animals with severe liver, kidney or pancreatic disease. It should not be used with other urinary acidifying products. This product is not intended for use in pregnant or nursing pets. Give Methigel with food, since it may cause gastrointestinal upset when fed on an empty stomach.

What is this product used for:
Methigel helps maintain normal urine pH, which may reduce the occurrence of crystal formation. It also helps control the odor from canine and feline urine residues.
Availability:
Methigel is a non-prescription (OTC) product containing 480mg DL-Methionine per teaspoon (6 grams).
How this product should be used:
Administer orally. The usual dose in cats at least 1 year in age is teaspoonful daily. The usual dose in dogs at least 1 year in age is 1 teaspoonful daily. To stimulate taste interest, place a small amount of Methigel on your pet's nose or directly into the mouth.
What are the side effects:
Large doses of Methigel may cause gastrointestinal upset when fed on an empty stomach.
What special precautions are there:
Safe use in pregnant pets or pets intended for breeding has not been proven. If your pet's condition worsens or does not improve, stop product administration and consult your veterinarian. Administer during feeding or after your pet has eaten to reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal upset. This medication should not be given to pets with severe liver, kidney or pancreatic disease.
In the event of overdose:
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.
How should I store this product:
Store this medication in a cool, dry place. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
Directions:
- Methigel is an extremely palatable supplemental substance. It can be given directly by mouth (see dosage below) or placed on your pet's nose to stimulate interest.

This is a great product that I highly recommend. My dog has had urine blockages since, a puppy. Used another product, but upset his stomach. I used this and in two days my dog was much better, with pain relief. I only keep my dog on it until his blockage is gone. He loves, loves, loves, the taste. Gently, licks off my finger. If your dog squats and finds it hard to urinate do try this product!

My cat loves this product
It seems to work well and my cat comes running for it. My only question is judging just how much to give and not over doing a good thing.

I total recommend this product for any animals with urinary infections. I give this to my cat who was suffering from kidney stones and it totally worked to help him go to the bathroom and keep the pain away!

Im sorry to say that angel wasnt happy with the product at all, it actually made her sick, so that made me question the product. i did try it again but i got the same reaction from her so i stopped giving it to her. i dont know what else to say except that i wouldnt reccomend this product. very sorry.....

"Sooo-Far--Sooo-Good"
This has Done The Job for my female cat who had very severe UTI #urinary tract infection#. The Vet would put her on an Anti-biotic and as soon as the Prescription was empty, she would get the infection back, and just as Severe. "It has been over seven months, since she has seen a Vet, and she has Been taking the Methigel the whole time. (NO PROBLEMS).
NOTE: I read the prescribed dosage and pre-cautions, and decided that i would only administer (2) twice a week. This has worked for her. I feared the Calcium precaution, so i cut dosage and upped the amount of Calcium in her diet (food). Yes Doc's * there is a "method to my madness" regarding this APPROACH. IF THEY FORM IT IN THE "LOWER" THEY NEED IT IN THE "UPPER", digestive tracts that is.
NOTE: i did Change diet to 90% soft food, along with this medication, Reducing the hard food intake.

Methigel is terrific
My 12 y/o neutered male cat was found on ultrasound to have a 2.0 mm stone in his bladder. He absolutely refused to eat CD wet or dry but loved the Methigel and licked it off a plate. The best part is that after 6 weeks, repeat x-rays showed the stone had dissolved and was GONE. Yes, it was a small stone and Methigel wouldn't help dissolve a larger stone but this was a huge relief for both of us and we'll continue it to ensure his bladder health.

Can this be mixed with canned food for complete consumption?
Large doses may cause gastrointestinal upset when fed on an empty stomach, so give this to your pet during or after feeding so mixing with canned or dry food will be fine. If it is a (picky) cat after they are done eating you can put the jell on the back of their paw. Cats are very clensy so they will start to clean (lick) the back of the paw immediately.

Methigel is not used to treat a urinary infection. It is used to promote a healthy urinary tract. However, if an infection occurs, the pet will require an antibiotic. You will need to have your pet examined by your veterinarian and he/she will determine the antibiotic to use.

Is it OK to use this product long term?
Only under the supervision of a vetinarian. If the urine ph gets too low, it can create calcium oxilate stones so monitoring ph level while using this product is my advice and your vet can help you with that.

What should I do if I think my cat has a UT infections?
Get to the vet right away! I just went through this with my male cat...he is 8....was blocked, they had to put a catheter in him for 3 days...he had a large crystal in his bladder that had caused an infection...he was in the hospital for 4 days...poor thing, but he is better now....stick to a low PH and magnesium diet for him...special diet foods are for urinary tract health, ....don't delay, take him today!!!!

Why was methigel discontinued?
Our dog has shown improvement using methigel . We feel this is a very good product and were very disappointed that it was discontinued by petmeds.
We now have it again!!!!
