What is Clomicalm?
Clomicalm (clomipramine) is used to treat separation anxiety in dogs in connection with behavior modification and training. Clomicalm requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

How it Works:
Clomicalm (clomipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant and affects chemicals in the brain (serotonin) that may become unbalanced leading to behavioral problems in dogs. Clomicalm Tablets treat separation anxiety in dogs. Separation anxiety is in many cases the root cause of behaviors such as excessive barking, inappropriate elimination, and other destructive tendencies. When used in conjunction with a training program, Clomicalm may be used to help decrease or eliminate these behaviors by helping treat the root cause.
Cautions:
Don't use Clomicalm if your pet is taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as Anipryl, or selegiline, or has been using a Preventic Collar in the last 14 days. Clomicalm may increase the effects of other drugs and may cause drowsiness. Stop giving your pet Clomicalm and contact your vet if the pet displays any of the following reactions: difficulty breathing, hives, irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, seizures, fever with increased panting, muscle stiffness or weakness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.

What is Clomicalm:
Clomicalm (clomipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant. Clomicalm affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced leading to behavioral problems in dogs. Clomicalm is used in dogs to treat separation anxiety.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Clomicalm to my pet:
Do not give this medication if your pet has taken or used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as selegiline, Mitaban Dip or Preventic Collar within the last 14 days. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver or kidney disease; asthma; thyroid disease; diabetes; stomach or intestinal problems; high blood pressure or heart disease; difficulty urinating, seizures, or glaucoma. Tell your veterinarian if the pet is pregnant or lactating.
What is the most important information I should know about Clomicalm:
Clomicalm is a prescription medication FDA approved for veterinary use in dogs. Clomicalm is available as 20mg, 40mg and 80mg tablets. The usual dose for dogs is 0.9-1.8mg per pound every 24 hours. Clomipramine FDA approved for human use, is also used in veterinary medicine. Clomipramine is available as 25mg, 50mg and 75mg capsules. The usual dose of Clomicalm in dogs is 0.5-1.5mg per pound every 24 hours. Clomicalm may also be useful in cats, but cats tend to be more sensitive to tricyclic antidepressant drugs. Dosing of cats may be difficult with the commercially available products. Clomicalm may not help symptoms right away. It may take a number of days before symptoms begin to lessen. Contact your veterinarian if symptoms get worse or if new symptoms develop while the pet is on this medication. Clomicalm may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
How should this medication be given:
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Allow pet to drink plenty of water. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Clomicalm at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What should I avoid while giving Clomicalm to my pet:
Clomicalm may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not stop giving Clomicalm suddenly. This could cause symptoms such as nausea and malaise.
What are the possible side effects of Clomicalm:
If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Clomicalm and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, tongue or face, or hives); seizures; a fast or irregular heartbeat; high blood pressure; difficulty urinating; or fever with increased panting, muscle stiffness or muscle weakness. Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue giving Clomicalm and talk to your veterinarian if your pet has drowsiness or dizziness; dry mouth and eyes; constipation; panting; mild agitation, weakness or headache; nausea or loss of weight or appetite. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
What other drugs will affect Clomicalm:
Do not give this medication if your pet has taken or used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as selegiline, Mitaban Dip or Preventic Collar within the last 14 days. Clomicalm may increase the effects of other drugs that may cause drowsiness, including other antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives, pain relievers, anxiety medications, and muscle relaxants. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Clomicalm. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medicines including herbal products.

Great for SEVERE separation anxiety
After trying pther medications and after almost giving up on our dog (we had been trying everything for more than 1 year), we finally have peace and we finally have our life back!!!!! My dog is so much happier now.... she stoped destroying the house and she stopped harming herself everytime we would leave the house.... we had spent thousand of dollars fixing our house and thousand of dollars in VET bills and we were really hopeless about our dpg issues.... She was the perfect dog when we were around, and another completely different dog when we were absent, even for a few minutes. We even adopted another dog to make her company, hoping that this would help her with her separation anxiety issues.... it worked for 2 month, and then, all of a sudeen, her old behavior patterns started repeat again.... I was so frustrated, so sad, I could not even go to work anymore... I tookd her to my job several times, and I hired pet sitters so many times, but the expenses to keep my dog ok were beyong what we could afford... and I was very tired psycologically....
I am very thankful I found this medicine! It saved my life, it saved my dog's life. The medicine plus having another dog to make her company when we are not around made a drastic difference!!!!

Lifesaver for our dog
When I rescued a 10 month old puppy who had been badly abused, I knew he would have issues, but knowing it and living it were two different things. He was TERRIFIED of his crate, so we couldn't crate train him. His anxiety issues caused uncontrollable diarrhea, but he was scared to go outside. I was at my wits end. We started him on 20 mg of clomicalm twice a day and nothing changed so I didn't renew the prescription. Then he went from bad to worse! I took him to the vet again and he's now on 80 mg. It wasn't like he got better overnight, but he did get better. Slowly I was able to train him. He's now housebroken and has learned basic obedience. He was a dog school drop-out before clomicalm. He's still a rambunctious puppy -- now 16 months old -- but he's a NORMAL rambunctious puppy. He's a great dog and I'm so glad we didn't give up on him.

Excellent Service
I am so happy with my order! I did the 1-2 day shipping and I got the medicine just in time before I went on vacation and left my dog boarding (I give him the pills to calm his anxiety while he's in boarding). The package was left at my door and for some reason my dog kept smelling the box. When I opened the box I found that 1800PetMeds added a treat just for my dog. He was so happy. Very good product
I have a Dachshund/Lab mix and she is extremely anxious 24/7. I was prescribed this product by my vet and it has done a world of difference. Now albeit she is not a calm little dog but it was at a point where I was going to have to give her back to rescue because of her anxiety. She would run over the other dogs and cats causing injury, but after Clomicalm she has improved significantly. I tried weening her off to see if she still needed the med and her anxiety returned as before.

Almost Gave Up
My dog, Molly, has been on Clomicalm for two weeks now. Molly (almost 2 yrs old) is absolutely terrified of the world and especially hates children and small dogs. I finally realized that socializing and being extra sweet to her wasn't going to fix her constant fear of everything. One weekend I had just had enough of her being so skittish, so we paid a visit to the vet and she recommended this medication. I have not noticed any difference other than her having diarrhea since the day she started on this medication. I couldn't imagine how miserable it would be to have diarrhea for two straight weeks so I was just about ready to call it quits and drop her off at a friends farm today until I read some of these reviews. According to most of these reviews, she hasn't taken the medication long enough for it to have had any effects. I'll continue to let her take it for another 4 weeks (just in case she is the exception) and I'm praying that it helps her like it has for many other dogs. I'll repost in 4 weeks and hopefully it will be with a 5 star rating. Thanks for sharing y'alls stories and giving me some hope.

Usually we get clomicalm at our vets but they have been having supply problems. The generic version was very expensive and on back-order. I got Hurley's prescription filled and got the meds in 2 days. We give it to Hurley(our Italian Greyhound) for anxiety during storms and separation anxiety and it works pretty well.

A lifesaver, finally something that works
I have 3 shih tzus, all of which we love like our own children. The last one we added to our family has been a real challenge, especially when we leave our house. She has chewed our carpet, end tables, boxes...you name it. I tried everything including: tons of kongs, the pheramone collar, pheramone diffuser, calming treats, Quiet Tea from Honest Kitchen, and multiple vet visits. The vet had us try Prozac, but we found that it made her throw up all the time and really made her seem like a zombie. I talked to our vet again and told him there had to be something else we could try. We love her to death, but we can't have her destroying our house and terrorizing our other 2 dogs. He said we could try this medicine, but it was very costly and they don't even carry it anymore in their practice due to the cost. He called the medicine into our local pharmacy, and the cost was $275 for 30 pills. I looked here and found it so much cheaper. She's been taking it for about 2 weeks now, it's working! She isn't like a zombie at all, her personality is the same, but it just seems to take the edge off of her. She hasn't been sick either. I started it slowly, still only giving her half the dose. I would highly recommend giving this a try if your dog is destructive and has anxiety.

This product is fine, but I prefer Clomipamine, which is the generic for clomicalm.
Clomicallm gave my German Shepherd some loose
stools. She seems to tolerate the generic much better.
I will be glad when it is back in stock.

is clomicalm suitable for older dogs
It may be a suitable medication for an older dog with anxiety issues. Its really up to your veterinarian
to decide if its a good choice for your individual pet based on over all health , symptoms, etc.

What dosage should be given a 3lb dog
the bottle now says clomicalm yellow 5# to be given 1/2 a tablet once a day
The dose to give your dog can only be prescribed by a veterinarian.
The usual dose would be 5 mg per day, but will ultimately be decided by your veterinarian.

Is there a dose for dogs between 20 and 44 pounds?
We use 20 mg for our doxie/jack russel mix. They are about 30 lbs. But ask your vet. depends on how many times a day you give the dogs a pill.

Clomicalm Availability time frame
Does anyone have any information on when the 80mg Clomicalm wil be available again? We started our almost 2yo GSP on it this fall and it has made a world of difference in her anxiety. The vet is switching us to Prozac for the time being, but this was working so well for her I hate to switch meds. Any info would be much appreciated.

Drug Interactions
Are the any other products/medications that should not be used with Colmicalm other than flea medications? My dog has bad allergies and I am wanting to give her some allergy medication (i.e low dose of benadryl ). Just wondering if allergy medications like that would have a interaction.
You may give an antihistamine to your dog while giving clomipramine; however, I would refrain from using benadryl since it may have additive side effects with the clomipramine such as increased drowsiness and increased heart rate to name a few. I would use a nondrowsy antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin, you can contact our pharmacy department for the proper dosing of these medications for your dog's weight.

How long will he have to take It?
Will my dog get to the place that he no longer has to be treated, or is this a lifetime problem?
It really depends on the pet. After your pet has been on the medication for a while, you can see how
they are responding to it. Some pets do stay on it long term, and sometimes the dose can be decreased after a while.
