What is miconazole lotion:
miconazole lotion is an antifungal medication used on dogs and cats which prevents fungus from growing on the skin. miconazole lotion is used to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm and yeast infections. Miconazole lotion may also be used for purposes other than those listed.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before using miconazole lotion on my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has had an allergic reaction to miconazole lotion in the past. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.
What is the most important information I should know about miconazole lotion:
Use this medication for the full amount of time prescribed by your veterinarian. Your pet's symptoms may improve before the infection is completely healed. Avoid getting this medication in the eyes, nose, or mouth. Miconazole is available by prescription as a 1% lotion in a 60ml dropper bottle. The usual dose of miconazole lotion is to first clean and dry the affected area, then apply a light covering of the lotion, using a gauze pad or cotton swab once or twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks.
What should I avoid while applying miconazole lotion:
Do not use bandages or dressings that do not allow air circulation over the affected area unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.
What are the possible side effects of miconazole lotion:
Serious side effects of miconazole lotion use are not expected. Stop using miconazole lotion and have your pet examined by the veterinarian if the pet experiences unusual or severe blistering, itching, redness, peeling, dryness, or irritation of the skin. Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
What other drugs will affect miconazole lotion:
Avoid applying other topical medications at the same time unless told to by the veterinarian. Other topical medications may affect the absorption or effectiveness of Miconazole lotion.
Directions:
- Miconazole lotion 1% is a prescription antifungal medication used on dogs and cats to treat fungal skin infections such as ringworm and yeast infections.
- If the infection does not clear up in 2 weeks, or if it appears to get worse, have your pet re-examined by the veterinarian.

Okay but can cause stinging, pain and discomfort
I have a bichon who has ringworm on his side and one spot on the front of his right leg. The spot that's on his side has responded okay to the lotion but certainly nothing miraculous or remarkable. The spot that is on his leg has not improved at all for a couple of reasons. It's on a much bonier spot than the other so it tends to be MUCH more sensitive (just like getting a tattoo) than say a fleshy part near his side. When I put the medication on that spot it stings THE TAR out of him and leaves him whining and whimpering and me feeling horrible. I will be discontinuing the use of this and try something else. The benefit does not outweigh the horribleness of hearing and seeing him be in pain. There has to be a better alternative.

Flaky Fungus Flees
This product sprays on easily. The skin was flaky and the hair was falling out. The house was covered in a dandruff-like grit. It has rapidly disappeared and the hair is growing back in fast. Wendy has multiple allergies and this has been safe for her.

My cocker spaniel has had recurrent yeast infections in her ears. The vet prescribed this treatment and it completely cleared up her infection and seems to be soothing when applied.

My kitten had very bad reaction after using this drug. It made him scratch to wonds. It didn't accure at the begining more in 3 weeks period. I was so furstrided that ringworm won't go away, instead it was spreding in more places. My vet said that it is very rare that kitten would have an allergic reaction, but it's possible.
So be careful.

What might the vet mix with miconazole to treatan ear infection?
The vet may use a steroid sometimes to help with itching and inflammation. It completely depends on what the veterinarian is treating. Sometimes they use a mix of antifungal and antibiotic.

i'm fostering a kitten from my nearby animal shelter and they don't have any meds for ringworm. its either he gets put down or i pay for the meds and i reelly do NOT want him to be euthenized.

Is miconazole nitrate supposed to smeel so strong and horrible? Just the smell of it burns my nose,
I can't imagine what it must feel like to my Golden's skin when applied. Also, is it normal for the skin to turn bright red after applying to areas being treated? Or is that a sign of allergic reaction?
There is a solvent-like odor to the product that is normal. It sounds like your pet may be allergic to the medication if the skin is turning bright red after it has been applied.

Are the miconazole products you can buy over the counter different from this one?
My vet told me to buy over the counter miconazole 1% or 2% at my local pharmacy in the athlete's foot/jock itch section. He said to use this on my dogs face but not near the mouth nor the eyes/nose. He also prescribed an oral medication. So far so good. Over night we saw a HUGE improvement in our chihuahua's face. It was so much better after the first application.
