What is Drontal?
Drontal is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in cats and kittens to treat tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms. Drontal requires a prescription, and is sold per tablet.

How it Works:
Drontal's active ingredients are praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Praziquantel works by damaging the parasite's skin internally, so the parasite disintegrates and is removed by the pet's immune system. Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids and acts as a blocking agent, causing paralysis. This results in the hookworm losing its grip in the intestinal wall and is removed from the pet's system by natural process.
Cautions:
Side effects are rare, but may include loss of appetite, increased salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet. Drontal tablets are not for use in kittens less than one month old or weighing less than 1.5 pounds.

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication. Tapeworm is a zoonotic infection meaning humans can contract tapeworm from animals. Discuss the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.
What is the most important information I should know about Drontal:
Drontal is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in cats and kittens. The usual dose of Drontal for cats and kittens at least 4 weeks old and 1.5-1.9 lbs is 1/4 tablet, 2-3 lbs is 1/2 tablet, 4-8 lbs is 1 tablet, 9-12 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets and 13-16 lbs is 2 tablets.
How should this medication be given:
Give Drontal exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Drontal is given as a single dose. Store Drontal at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Drontal Feline tablets are given as a single dose.
What should I avoid while giving Drontal to my pet:
Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.
What are the possible side effects of Drontal:
Side effects of Drontal are rare but may include loss of appetite, increased salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
What other drugs will affect Drontal:

Absolutely don't count on giving it in food
My cat stopped well short of ingesting the entire "small amount" of food the medicine was applied to. This resulted in waste of 1.5 pills which does not come at small cost (nearly $12). Therefore my suggestion to save money, the disappointment of discovering your cat really does have a discriminating palate, and replacing the medicine, would be to give it by force. Yikes! There I said it. Plan on it for your cat will not cooperate by just eating some. In any case, you've been cautioned and, by the way, best of luck! I will inform on the med's effectiveness following administration, an event not yet reckoned with and looked forward to with much apprehension. .

This Product is amazing!
I'm so happy we were able to get rid of Robin's worms and his health is better and he is eating less and not as much like all the time! His bowels aren't smelling as bad and he is not vomiting a lot either !!!! Thanks PETMeds!!!!

Drontal Works!
I love this product. I have used it twice on my cat so far and it clears the worms within a few days. He is much healthier now that his worms are gone. I loved how petmeds included catnip in the package as a thoughtful addition to ensure the well being of my pet. My cat loved playing with it. The process to get the prescription from my veterinarian was also super easy and required absolutely no effort from me. I will definitely go through petmeds again in the future.

the product Drontal worked wonderfully. every time i've used it the issue was cleared up . i've had the best customer service and prompt help with 1800 petmeds. they are my go to company for all my pet needs and i definitely recommend them to everyone who has animals.

the petmed people are great!
The Drontal product is good and works, vinny is feeling much better. This review is more about the pharmacy than the drug. I needed this med within a certain period and due to mail error did not receive it. When I called Petmeds they resent, overnight, a new delivery at their expense AND the phamacist contacted me to make sure I got what i needed and was able to give the proper dosage. Thank you Petmeds.

Have used Drontal for years and it is very effective. Our cats were always outdoors and I had to worm 2x a year and Drontal was the easiest way to rid them quickly. They are indoors now,

Identifying Drontal
I thought my cat swallowed the Drontal on Fri. but today Sunday I found a table very much like the Drontal which I thought she got.
How can I identify the tablet...
On one side it has Mylan 216 the other side it has the number 40, the tablet is scored and is a light cream color...
before I give the tab to my cat, i need to know if it is correct....
The drontal for cats should be yellow with the markings D8 on it, it is not manufactured by Mylan so I definitely would not give her the other tablet you found.

should Drontal be given again 3 weeks after first dose in a 4 month old kitten or should you have a stool sample done again?
I adopted a kitten at 3 1/2 months who had a lot of tape worms and roundworms. My vet gave her 1 drontal tablet and said to give her another tablet in three weeks. then bring in a stool sample 2 weeks after the second dose. She is 4 1/2 lbs, should i bring in a stool sample before giving her the second dose?
No, I'd wait until after you give her the second dose. The reason for the second dose is to kill any eggs that may have hatched. Good luck!

my 8 wk old pup has tape worm and was given 1 drontal 22.7 she weighs4 lbs. i noticed my boston has the worms too he weighs 20 lbs how much should i give him and do i have to have a rx?
A 20 pound dog would need two tablets as a single dose for a proper deworming. Please inform your veterinarian that your Boston is now infected.

How can you be sure of Drontals effectiveness?
Ive used many deworming medicines in the past on my cats and the results are very similar. Once given the medicine, the cats still pass a few worms and it 'seems' to clear up. But what happens to all the worms that are still in the cat? Shouldnt they come out of the body? I am very skeptic of any deworming medication because it doesnt make sense for the worms to stay in the body. And we are not millionaires so regular visits to the vet for stool samples are out of the question.
My kitten just got Drontal at thevet an the vet said the medicine destroys the protective layer of the worms allowing the worms to just be digested, which is why you just stop seeing them. Hope this helps.

When is the soonest I can use this product, i.e. can I give it to a 1month old kitten?
How often can I use it? I heard worming should take place every two weeks for the first three months.
You can start using in a 1 month old kitten if they weigh more than 1.5lbs. You should talk to your veterinarian to determine how often you will need to use it.

Could Drontal have made my puppy hyper?
My vet prescribed my 9.6 lb puppy (age 4 months) 1 1/2 tabs of Drontal. I gave it to him last night following dinner. Ever since, my puppy has been off the wall. He had been sleeping well through the night and taking good naps gated in the kitchen. Last night he barked for a long time, peed in the kitchen, then began jumping over the gate in order to come find me. He is having terrible separation anxiety, won't eat, and even after a great deal of exercise will not rest. If I put him in the kitchen he does not stop barking. This is driving me insane, and is quite different from how he has been behaving. We have been working hard to train him, and I have been trying to ignore the behavior, but he doesn't settle down like usual. The only difference I can think of is the Drontal.
Loss of appetite can be a side effect of this drug, but mostly when the dose is too high. Now, just to be clear, Drontal is only for use in cats and kittens. Drontal Plus is for dogs. If you look at the ingredients in both, the dose of Pyrantel Pamoate in Drontal is much higher than in the Drontal Plus. This higher dose could potentially be the issue if your puppy is taking Drontal instead of the Drontal Plus.
