What is Baytril Taste Tabs?
Baytril Taste Tabs are used to treat many types of bacterial infections. It's a fluroquinolone antibiotic used for infections of the urinary tract, skin, prostate, GI tract, liver, and lungs. Baytril requires a prescription from your veterinarian. Baytril Taste Tabs are sold per tablet.

How it Works:
Baytril is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Fluoroquinolones interfere with bacterial DNA metabolism to kill the bacteria.
Cautions:
Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Do not give Baytril with vitamin/mineral products or within 2 hours of giving an antacid or sucralfate. Tell your veterinarian about any other medications your pet is being given.

What is the most important information I should know about Baytril Taste Tabs:
Baytril is a prescription medication FDA-approved for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Baytril is available as 22.7mg, 68mg and 136mg scored chewable tablets for dogs and cats. The usual dose of Baytril for dogs is 2.27-9.07mg/pound every 24 hours. The usual dose of Baytril for cats is 2.27mg/pound every 24 hours. The dog and cat doses may be divided into two doses 12 hours apart. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Do not give Baytril to any pet other than the pet for whom it was prescribed. Baytril is not for use in animals allergic to it or other fluroquinolone antibiotic drugs. It is advised that Baytril should not be used in younger dogs during their rapid growth phase, approximately 2 to 8 months in small to medium breeds, 2 to 12 months in large dogs, and 2 to 18 months in giant breeds.
What is Baytril:
Baytril is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the urinary tract, skin, prostate, GI tract, liver, and lungs due to susceptible organisms. This medication may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Baytril Taste Tabs to my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has had seizures, or is pregnant or lactating.
How should this medication be given:
Give Baytril Taste Tabs exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Give all of the medication your veterinarian has prescribed. Symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Allow plenty of water for your pet to drink. Do not exceed the maximum dose of 2.27mg/pound per day in cats because of an increased risk of altered vision or blindness. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Baytril at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and give only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose the pet:
Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
What should I avoid while giving Baytril Taste Tabs to my pet:
Do not use Baytril in animals allergic to it or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Do not give Baytril within 2 hours of giving an antacid or sucralfate, vitamin/mineral products, or dairy products.
What are the possible side effects of Baytril Taste Tabs:
Stop giving the medication and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; or hives). Other less serious side effects may also occur. Continue to give the medication and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or drowsiness. Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.
What other drugs will affect Baytril Taste Tabs:
Before giving Baytril, tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given warfarin, theophylline, probenecid, or phenytoin. When given with cyclosporine, Baytril can increase the risk of kidney damage from the cyclosporine. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Baytril. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Our dog has had probably 10 bladder infections in the last 4 years and for the last 2 infections our vet has prescribed Baytril. This med works but so have the other cheaper meds that she had been on and they are charging us $83.00 for 10, 136 mg Baytril scored tabs. That's a lot of money esp when the other ones worked. I really like our vet but this makes me wonder how much of a mark up I'm paying.

My Pomeranian has had liver disease for over one year. Of the five different antibiotics she has been on, Baytril is the only one that doesn't make her vomit or decrease her appetite, and her liver enzyme counts are slowly decreasing back toward the normal range.

Works most of the time
My second Bichon Frise has chronic urinary infections as did the first due to struvite crystals common to the breed. My vet always prescribes Baytril for the infections which are almost all the time. It works while their is an infection, but 2 days later she has more infection, so more Baytril.. I am afraid she will build an immunity to this product. I also must say my vet is inline with the cost here.(almost the same). If anyone knows other than diet change, a better solution I would like to hear about it. Wish Pet Meds had more holistic solutions & products!

My dog had a UTI-4 Baytril a day for 7 days and she is now negative for the E coli bacteria--and she is a 100 lb. female-----I am very satisfied with the results

My Cat went blind also
My 15 yr old cat was diagnosed w/an inner ear infection (tilting head and could not stand or walk) Our vet put her on oral Baytril for about 2 wks. We noticed her pupils were huge even when outside and she started walking into things. Later, I read that some older cats can be blinded from Baytril and that memos concerning these findings were sent to all the vets who use this medication. I blame the vet for givingBaytril to my cat which he knew was 15 yrs old. My cat died about a month later. I know that the Baytril blinded her, I don't know if it created complications resulting in her death or if it was her old age or if she just gave up after becoming blind. Please be cautious about this medication if your cat is very old or may not be healthy enough to withstand the side effects.

The Cat and Dog repair which I used this weekend charged me 137.84 for 21 Baytril 68 mg. It's time to regulate this industry, obviously they are NOT self regulating nor is there a viable conscience. Is it morally ok to exploit the needy?????? These prices are fair.

what is the baytril dosage for an extremely small dog
I have a 13 yr old 3.8 lb chihuahua & was given Baytril 68 mg chew tab. I was told to give 1/4 of a tab 2 times a day.She has a very sensitive stomach.I would like to know the low to high range dose for her & the best way to give it to her for her stomach. Thank you.
The manufacturer's recommended dosage range for Baytril is 9mg to 34mg as a single dose once a day or divided into 2 doses 12 hours apart. Your pet is taking the 34mg dose divided into 2 doses.
The medication may be given with food to help with her sensitive stomach.

How many tablets come in a bottle?
Do you just get 1 tablet for $1.37? My dog is always scratching at his ear. we have been cleaning them every night. & they are still bothering him. we took him to the vet and they just gave us some ear wash medication and it still isn't helping. I hope this help. just not sure how many Im getting. Is it just the tablet or the whole bottle?

Baytril with Zonisamide
My 16 lb Italian Greyhound was just prescribed three and a half 22.7mg tabs once a day for a urinary Ecoli / Pantoea infection. My questions are #1 is that the correct dose and #2 what if he is already on 50mg Zonisamide twice a day for seizures?.
The dose is appropriate for your dog's weight.
You need to check with your veterinarian about using the Baytril for a pet that has been on Zonisamide. It should be okay to use together, but with conditions such as epilepsy, it is best to check with your veterinarian.

What is the reason for "Do not give Baytril with vitamin/mineral products or within 2 hours of giving an antacid or sucralfate....or dairy"?
I wasn't told about this warning and had been wrapping the tablet in cheese b/c my dog would not take them. Does this mean I just wasted all that medication?
Dairy products, antacids and sucralfate all can decrease the absorption of the Baytril. The medication was not entirely wasted however studies in humans show up to a third of the medication was not absorbed when it is given with milk or yogurt. Please contact your veterinarian right away in case your pet needs to be re-evaluated. In the future, the medication may be given with a very small amount (1/2 teaspoon) of wet dog food in place of the cheese.

my cat has chronic uri and was given baytril by the vet. she has him on 1 68mg tab once a day. hes about 12 lbs. after noticing dosage on other websites I feel that this is too much medicine am I correct ? I think he should be getting half of that.i called dr. still waiting for a response..thanks
You are right. The usual dose would be around 27 mg once a day for a cat of 12 lbs. That may be rounded off as 1/2 tablet of the 68mg. By all means confirm with your veterinarian.
