What is Cat Heartgard Chewables?
Heartgard Chewables are a flavored treatment for cats given once a month to prevent heartworms, and for the removal and control of adult and immature hookworms. Heartgard Chewables require a prescription from your veterinarian.

How it Works:
Heartgard prevents heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for a month after infection.
Cautions:
It is important that you give your pet this preventative every month. If you miss than two monthly doses, we recommend calling your vet before continuing the medication. Also, note that side effects are rare at the recommended heartworm prevention dose. Side effects in cats include agitation, loss of appetite, staggering, dilated pupils, tremors, blindness and disorientation.

What is the most important information I should know about Heartgard Chewables for Cats:
Heartgard Chewables for Cats is a prescription medication available as a palatable meaty flavored chewables tablet. The usual dose of Heartgard Chewables for cats 5 pounds or less is 55mcg (red box) and for cats 6 to 15 pounds is 165mcg (purple box). The chewable tablets must be chewed and should not be swallowed whole. For cats, the pieces can be broken and crumbled into food or fed directly to the cat.
How should this medication be given:
Give Heartgard exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Heartgard chewable tablets must be chewed. They should not be swallowed whole. Store Heartgard Chewables for Cats at room temperature. Do not remove the chew from its wrapper until ready to give the medicine. Keep this medication away from children and pets. Cat Heartgard Chewables is safe for use in pregnant or lactating cats.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What should I avoid while giving Heartgard Chewables to my pet:
Because humans can contract hookworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.
What are the possible side effects of Heartgard Chewables:
Side effects of Heartgard are rare at the recommended heartworm prevention dose. Side effects that may occur in cats include agitation, loss of appetite, staggering, dilated pupils, tremors, blindness and disorientation.
What other drugs will affect Heartgard Chewables:
Do not give Heartgard to your pet if already taking another heartworm medication.

My cat has been on this brand most of her life.
I just chop it up fine and mix with a little of her soft food and she eats it all.

Cat Loves It
As far as I know the product is working to keep our Cat Heart Healthy. Vet says he is what every cat should be like. The liquid alternatives did not work for us, somehow he would always get his head turned around and lick the stuff...then I would have Foaming At The Mouth Cat. That was never fun. Vet recommended these pills, since our Cat loves treats I had no problem getting him to eat these. He gobbles it up and begs for more. Perfect product for us. Thanks!

One of the easiest medicines to give
Usually my cats spit out medicine or even hack it up after they've swallowed it.
This must taste pretty good because she took it right down. Best choice!

Ease of administration
I honestly didn't know how I was going to get Abby to take her Heartgard. I knew it was flavored but we all know how cats are when it comes to anything edible. If you want them to eat it they won't. Well, she sniffed the heartgard and ate it right from my hand.

Heartgard Chewables : I was afraid it was going to be a fight with my cat to get her to eat it. What a surprise! she chewed it with no problems. Was the easiest medication I have ever given to her.

Excellent product
Our Siamese cat, Chloe, always eats the Heartgard without hesitation. She is an indoor cat, but gets Heartgard year round as a preventive measure.

Is Ivermectin ok for cats to take orally?
I am quite confused, as i see Hartguard's main ingredient is ivermectin, but I have had a vet tell me NEVER to orally administer ivermectin to a cat, rather use it topically? Please let me know. I take care of a stray cat outside my office and I would like to get him on heartworm prevention, but I need to know how to administer it.
It can be administered orally, it just cannot be given as an injection.

You can ask your veterinarian about prescribing heartgard for cats 5 to 15 pounds, but the dose

Can heartgard also protect against other parasites such as fleas, ticks or mites?
Sorry, no. Heartgard only protects against heartworm disease. Heartgard Plus protects against heartworm disease as well as roundworm and hookworm, which are intestinal parasites. Medications such as Revolution and Advantage Multi protect against fleas, and/or ticks, and/or mites.

MY DOG IS 5 YEARARS OLD HAD NEVER TAKEN HEARTGUARD WHAT SHOUD I DO ?
Have your Vet do a test to make sure they don't have heartworm and then give them heartguard once a month if they don't have it. It's so easy to order online once your vet gives you a perscription. Just mail it in to them and then any further scripts needed the following years they can get directly from the vet.
