How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your Home

Top 3 Myths about Fleas

  1. MYTH: My house is so clean there is no way I have fleas!
    • FACT: Fleas embed themselves in carpeting and furniture and you may never see them - even if you have white carpet.

  2. MYTH: You treated your home once and now the fleas are gone.
    • FACT: Fleas can live for weeks in your home without a host, so you MUST treat your house AGAIN to eliminate fleas.

  3. MYTH: I treated my pet, so there aren't fleas in my house.
    • FACT: Flea prevention is different than a flea infestation. The fleas living on pets make up only 5% of a flea problem; the majority of fleas live in the home.

The 4 Steps To Remove a Flea Infestation From Your Home

Thoroughly clean your home.

  • Vacuum all the carpets, rugs, and upholstery in your home, and throw away the bag - Fleas, eggs and larvae embed themselves in dark places (like your carpet and furniture) to grow and develop. Vacuum ALL the carpets, rugs and upholstery in your home and throw away the bag - this prevents fleas from crawling out and laying more eggs.
  • Wash all your belongings and your pet's belongings in hot water - Flea eggs fall off pets into your home. Wash anything your pet has touched, laid on or snuggled with (like toys). If it can't be washed, throw it away.
  • Clean your tile and wood floors - Even if you don't have carpeting, fleas can live for weeks without a host under furniture and in baseboards.

Treat your home.

  • Sprinkle Premise Treatment - a salt-like granule made of borax that can be sprinkled onto carpeting and upholstery. It is one of the best defenses against fleas. It cuts into deep fibers where flea eggs and larvae live and stops pupae from forming.
  • Use carpet spray - use sprays almost anywhere in the home to get rid of fleas. Combine it with premise treatment to really get down deep into fibers.
  • Fog your house - foggers work well for people who have tile or hardwood floors. Most foggers treat a specific area, so calculate how many foggers your whole house will need to completely kill fleas.

Treat your home, AGAIN!

Many owners think that once they treat their house their flea troubles are over. Unfortunately, sometimes this isn't always true. Before a flea becomes an adult, larvae transform into pupae, are resistant to insecticides and live up to 2 weeks. Which is why you may still see fleas in your home for an extended period of time. The bottom line, 2 weeks after your first treatment, you MUST treat your home AGAIN!

  1. Vacuum your home.
  1. Wash all your pet's toys and bedding
  1. Spray, fog or sprinkle your home with insecticides.

Prevent it from happening again.

You can prevent a reinfestation. Follow some simple guidelines below to keep your house flea-free.
  • Vacuum carpets, rugs and furniture regularly (this is the single best defense against an infestation).
  • Sweep tile and wood floors, focusing on baseboards and crevices.
  • Don't leave belongings outside for an extended period of time. Fleas attach themselves to shoes and other items that you have taken off at the door and then hitchhike into your home, when you bring them indoors.
  • Spray your yard for fleas with Virbac Yard Spray and make sure to focus on shady, moist, dark areas.

Max's Tip: Fleas can enter your home from your yard. Stop fleas from invading your home by learning how to treat your yard properly.
