Pet Medications for Ear Infections

Pets who itch and scratch their ears or frequently shake their heads might be suffering from an ear infection, especially if it's coupled with smelly ears. Although any pet can develop an ear infection, some breeds are more likely to develop them than others. For instance, Labradors, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, Shar Peis, and Springer Spaniels are several breeds that are prone to ear infections due to characteristics of the skin in their ear canals.

For many dogs and cats, ear infections are a common health issue and were one of the top 10 reasons for veterinary visits in 2009. However, in many cases ear infections in both dogs and cats can be prevented by routinely cleaning the ears. Although it's not uncommon for a pet to develop an ear infection, some pets could develop chronic ear infections. In these instances, your veterinarian will need to determine the cause for the recurring issue. In some cases, chronic ear infections may be a result of alllergic reactions.

Use ear cleansers regularly to prevent infections.

Cleaning your pet's ears regularly can help prevent the development of ear infections. A weekly cleaning (or as often as your vet recommends) is a great way to help keep your pet's ears clean of fungus and yeast which can result in chronic ear problems. To clean your pet's ears:
  • Soak a cotton ball in the ear cleaning solution and squeeze out any excess solution
  • Gently rub the cotton ball around the inside of your pet's ear.
  • Allow your pet to shake his or her head. This movement helps to remove dirt from inside the ear.
If using a product like Zymox Otic, Dr. Michael Dym, VMD recommends the following:

"For pets with an ear infection, treat it with Zymox HC for 7-14 days and then wait 2-3 days before cleaning your pet's ears or using another ear medication. If the condition worsens, see your veterinarian immediately."

Treating ear infections with antibiotics.

If your pet develops an ear infection, your vet will likely prescribe an antibiotic like Tresaderm, Otomax, or Mometamax.

Max's Tip: Dry your pet's ear canals after bathing and swimming.
