Helping Pets through Adoption & Ongoing Care
|
Every day pets are forced out of their homes, a situation becoming more common due to changing lifestyles, including recent financial stress endured by many families across the country. With many pet owners finding themselves without jobs, shelters are being overwhelmed with the amount of pets being dropped off; a likely result of pet owners no longer being able to properly care for their extended family members.
As shelters become increasingly overcrowded, many staff members are left with no other option but to euthanize pets; a decision that is incredibly difficult for any employee. As a pet lover there are ways you can help, whether it is by adopting, donating to a shelter, or better managing your pet's expenses. All of these methods can help to keep pets healthy and in happy homes.

Adopt a dog or cat from a shelter.
Recently the Ad Council partnered with the Humane Society and Maddie's Fund to create The Shelter Pet Project, an advertising campaign aimed at pet lovers to consider local shelters as their first choice when searching for a pet companion. The Shelter Pet Project website is powered by PetFinder, a popular pet directory to help prospective pet parents find their newest family member. In addition to search options for pets, the campaign also encourages the use of social media via YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook to help spread awareness on the importance of adopting from a shelter.
Some of the reasons many pet lovers choose to adopt is because most shelters provide discounted services to adopted pets, and the pets may already be housebroken and trained. However, the most popular reason pet owners choose to adopt from a shelter is because it is the act of saving a life.
Even if you may not be able to adopt from a local shelter, there are options to foster, volunteer, or donate. Shelters are constantly in need of help, so any way you can help is sure to be appreciated.

Preventive care can save money on your pet's health expenses.
Many pets that are adopted through a shelter are usually spayed or neutered and also have up-to-date shots. In these cases, a one-time adoption fee more than covers the amount of care the shelter has provided for your pet. After the initial adoption fee, maintaining regular care is an important part of being a responsible pet parent.
Unfortunately, one way pet owners try to save money on pet expenses is by skimping on routine care for their pet. Although this route may seem economical for the short term, it can actually lead to higher vet costs in the long run. Routine check-ups should always be conducted, and preventative care provided (fleas and ticks, heartworms, joint care, and dental hygiene).
Using preventatives for fleas and ticks can not only help save time in battling a flea infestation, but it also prevents your pet from developing skin infections and hot spots. Heartworms are also preventable and if your pet isn't protected, this disease could lead to heart problems or even death in severe heartworm disease cases.

Although flea and heartworm medications may seem expensive, 1-800-PetMeds makes it easy to save money. Not only do we offer low prices on top-selling flea and tick and heartworm medications, but we also offer excellent service and a 100% product guarantee.
Another way you can help reduce your pet expenses is to sign your pet up for an insurance policy. In many cases these plans can save up to 30% off vet visits and there are a variety of customized local and nationwide plans available, which make it easy to keep your pet covered.
