Not your dog’s favorite family member?

You can become your dog's best friend with certain techniques.

While it's nice to imagine your family dog being the best friend to everyone, the fact of the matter is that some dogs to tend to have their "favorites" among their pack. The natural instinct of canines is to form a social hierarchy in their pack, so one person is naturally the leader and others fall into their subsequent roles. However, if you're not the top dog in your dog's eyes, it's only human to feel kind of hurt.

The "favorite" member of the family is generally the one who serves the dog its pet food, throws the ball for it and takes it on walks the most often. The power of these times to bond with canines is unmatched – the key to a dog's heart is truly through exercise and food, and love comes after.

It is important to rule out fear as the reason your dog is not totally fond of you, VetStreet.com reports. If the dog cowers, hides, urinates or acts aggressively around you, it might be because it is afraid of you. This can be caused by any number of issues, but is something you should discuss with your veterinarian if you feel that there is no reason for the dog to fear you.

To get your dog to like you more, you need to figure out what makes it happy. While some pups may get great joy from cuddling and being pet, others do not like to be touched. For the latter variety, it may come to respect you more if you back off a bit, and instead engage it in things it likes, such as long walks on its Flexi Retractable Leash or trips to the dog park to play a game of fetch with its Wing-A-Ball.

In addition, feeding your dog – whether you serve up its Nature's Variety Instinct Beef Formula Canned Dog Food or offer it Greenies Dental Treats – helps it associate interactions with you with a reward. If your dog seems anxious or nervous around you at first, it may ease the tension to use a calming aid like Comfort Zone for Dogs. Pet drugs like this work naturally, filling the air with a pheromone that makes the dog feel safer and more secure.
