English bulldogs make great family pets
There are a few dog breeds that are well-known around the globe and one of these fan favorites is the English bulldog. This breed is both lovable and stubborn and has eyes that could melt even the coldest of hearts. English bulldogs were originally bred to live alongside butchers who needed to keep their unruly oxen in line. They were also used as guard dogs, hunting dogs and more commonly as bait dogs in fights with other animals. The sport involved tethering a bull, bear, horse or other large animal and then sending dogs in to try and overpower the wild animal. The act is now considered inhumane, though in the 13th century it was quite popular. Now, however English bulldogs are known for snuggling on couches and enjoying treats like Greenies for Dogs from their owners.
English bulldogs are quite the lookers and their past jobs certainly had an impact on their appearance. Most are medium sized with a stocky build and large chests. Their legs are short and bowed and their tails are often curled. Their coat is tan, black, white or a combination of colors and is short. They only require minimal grooming with pet supplies like a Resco Pro-Series Large Slicker Brush. English bulldogs have a short muzzle and an under bite – which was used to latch onto prey during its bait days. They have squished in noses which can make them snore and susceptible to heat stroke, so they shouldn't live in hot climates if possible.
This stocky breed is know to be stubborn, however most are also quite gentle and loving at the same time. Their small statures make it easy for them to live in an apartment setting or in a larger house. They don't enjoy exercise too much – just a walk around the block on a Flexi Retractable Leash once or twice a day should be enough. This breed tends to lounge around on beds like the Heated Bolster Dog Bed until their owners return.
English bulldogs make great family pets as they enjoy the company of constant companions. They are generally good around children of all ages and are very protective. Many will alert their families of strangers by barking or growling, but most won't actually attack a predator.
Bulldogs can be prone to certain health conditions like hip dysplasia, cherry eye and numerous skin disorders. Owners may want to start their English bulldogs on joint supplements like Glyco Flex III to help keep their dogs joints healthy and use eye cleaning products like Neo Poly Ophth Susp to ward off any vision problems. A daily supplement like Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet may help all three issues as it works to protect a dog's eyes, heart, skin and coat and muscles and joints.
