Adopting a cat? Here’s what you need to know
There are thousands of cats in shelters across America, so choosing to let one into your home and heart is a noble act. Not to mention, you are gaining what is sure to be one of your best friends. Before you bring your new feline friend home from the shelter, make sure you are prepared for the type of care you need to give it.
Many cats at shelters are vaccinated, spayed and neutered, which trims down your initial vet bill. Make sure your cat has been vaccinated for rabies, feline herpes, calici virus, and feline parvovirus. One preventative medication that your cat most likely did not get at the shelter is a flea and heartworm preventative, so make sure you start giving your feline pet drugs like Revolution right away. This medication prevents heartworm disease and kills fleas and flea eggs.
You should also stock up on all the necessary pet products you will need to keep your cat happy, healthy and entertained. Choose a high-quality pet food like Taste of the Wild Dry Cat Food and invest in plenty of treats like Feline Greenies Dental Treats. Not only will your new cat love the taste of these snacks, but they will keep its teeth clean, preventing dental and periodontal disease, both of which are common in felines. Keep its water dish fresh and clean.
You should also cat-proof your home. This step is especially important if you are getting a younger feline. Kittens and young cats are curious and mischievous, and if you are going to leave them home alone, they may play with electric cords or get into poisonous substances. Look out for ant and rat poison, antifreeze, bleach, cleaning supplies and plastic bags. Also, make sure there are not any small spaces where your cat might get stuck. You can block hazards off from your cat using a gate like the Mission Aztec Freestanding Pet Gate.
Another way to prepare is make sure you have everything you need to take care of your cat. Cat litter like Arm & Hammer Multicat Clump Litter is a must, as is a cozy bed like a Heated Cat Pad. The cat will also need some toys like the EEKS! Catnip Mouse Toy. If you really want to treat your cat, get a structure like the Whisker World Stairway to Heaven Cat Tree. This furniture has a scratching post and places to play and hide.
