Why won’t my cat play anymore?

It is normal for cats to lie around, but make sure nothing is bothering your older feline to cause the lethargy.

When you first got your feline friend, it was likely a lively, frisky little kitten who would play with anything at any time. Of course, this got problematic at times, as the kitty would likely play with cords, your socks – anything. However, as your cat ages, you might notice a decrease in its activity.

A decrease in your cat's playfulness is completely normal, in most cases. Just like humans, cats mature and their interests change. While it might have once been mesmerized by pet products like the Burlap Heart Catnip Toy or AppeTeasers Plush Catnip Cat Toy, it might now prefer to lounge on its Heated Cat Pad.

These changes are normal, but exercise and physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle for cats of any age. Even if you switch your cat to a low-fat pet food like Artemis Fresh Mix Weight Management and Senior Cat Food, some physical activity is necessary.

You can try to engage your cat by investing in intriguing and entertaining cat furniture like the Whisker World Cat Tree Condo, which has hanging ropes to play with and cozy places to rest. You might also have to set aside some time to play with your cat. When engaged in a game with you, your cat is much more likely to move around and play. Try waving around the feathers of a toy like the Burlap Heart Catnip Toy or get one that interacts with your cat like the Crazy Circle Interactive Cat Toy.

If your cat is still extremely hesitant to play even when you start a game, you might want to bring it to the vet to make sure another health problem isn't bringing its spirits or energy levels down. A number of health conditions can cause lethargy, while joint pain may also be to blame. Your vet may recommend giving your cat pet drugs like Dasuquin, which has chondroitin and glucosamine for dogs and cats – these both support healthy cartilage in the joints. Some cats are better able to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle with pain medication for arthritis like Prednisone. Stick this pill in Greenies Pill Pockets to help your cat
swallow the whole thing easily.
