Kansas wants to make Toto breed official state dog

A legislator in Kansas wants to make the cairn terrier the official state dog in honor of the pooch who played Toto in the legendary film "The Wizard of Oz," ABC News reports.
Representative Ed Trimmer proposed a bill that would designate this canine as the official breed of Kansas after being approached by the South Central Kansas Kennel Club, according to the New York Daily News. The chairwoman of the group feels the breed designation is important for the state.
The cairn terrier is the "essence of terrier," according to Animal Planet. It is spunky and spirited, bold and curious, as well as hardy and scrappy. These characteristics are perhaps what got the pooch a role as Dorothy's brave companion in the famous 1939 film.
If the bill gets passed, Kansas should be proud to have the "Toto dog" as its mascot. Aside from being adorable, this dog strives to please its owner and has a sensitive side. Originally bred in Scotland during the Middle Ages to kill vermin, the dog still retains some of its instincts to chase small animals. However, its friendly demeanor and tough build makes it a great companion for small children.
This high-energy pooch needs plenty of mental and physical exercise, too. Invest in some pet products like the Booda Tail Spin Flyer for outdoor play sessions and a food puzzle like the Buster Food Cube to keep its brain engaged indoors. When you fill this toy with pet food like the Candidae Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Dog Food, the cairn terrier will spend hours trying to figure out how to get the kibble out.
The cairn terrier has "loads of personality," and will not let their owners ignore them, the news source reports. Their demanding attitude prevails, but they are also the type of dog to give families a more than excited greeting when they walk in the door. The dog's distinct, tenacious personality is likely why the British breed club calls it "the best little pal in the world."
Coat colors can range from gray to sand – essentially any color other than white. The coat is wiry and, when maintained properly, is water and weather resistant. Keep supplies like the Resco Pro-Series Large Slicker Brush on hand for weekly grooming sessions, and strip off dead hair at least twice a year.
