Is your food making your furry friend sick?

Be sure you're feeding your pet the right food

When your dog or cat is sick, you want to do everything in your power to nurse them back to health and keep them comfortable. Of course, keeping them fed is crucial, but if they're ill, it can be a bit of a challenge. However, there are ways that you can make sure your furry friend is getting the proper nutrients, you just have to determine the cause of its ailment first.

You may not realize this, but it could be the pet food you're feeding your animal that is what's making it ill. Obesity is the most common nutrition problem in cats and dogs, and it could cause them to develop such conditions as arthritis, pancreatitis, diabetes and skin problems. If you notice any of these conditions, and you know your pet is a bit overweight, you may want to talk to your veterinarian about possible diet plans for your furry friend. If your dog is suffering from arthritis due to obesity, you may want to consider pet drugs with glucosamine for dogs such as Super Joint Enhancer, as this can help enhance their joints. Metacam can also help, but
you'll need to talk to your veterinarian about a prescription. Certain pet food can also help with obesity, such as Now Fresh Grain Free Senior recipe Dry Dog Food, which is made for both senior dogs and canines with obesity.

Another way the food you feed could be keeping your pet sick is if it has an allergy. Animals are prone to food allergies, and pets could suddenly develop an allergic reaction if its immune system thinks the food is harmful. These symptoms could include nausea, diarrhea, malaise and vomiting for dogs, while cats will scratch themselves, which could cause infections. However, there are ways to help. By limiting the amount of protein your furry friend eats in one sitting, you may be able to stave off allergic reactions.

When feeding your pet, always make sure you look at the nutritional value of the pet food. You want to ensure Fido is getting the right dietary amount of proteins and vitamins, as having poor nutrition could lead to some health problems such as dilated cardiomyopathy. While this condition, which deals with a swollen heart muscle, could occur for a number of reasons, not having enough amino acid taurine in the system is one of them. This is most prevalent in cats and should the condition fully develop, your furry friend's heart may weaken.
