The best way to remove skunk odor
As the weather gets warmer, you are more likely to see woodland creatures emerging from their winter hiding spots. While you can protect your dog from other harmful creatures like ticks, fleas and mosquitoes using pet drugs like Sentinel or Revolution, one critter you can't protect your dog from is the skunk. Skunks are infamous for their smelly interactions with house pets.
Almost all dogs will chase or bark at a skunk when they see it, whether out of curiosity or natural instincts. It is almost inevitable that your dog will get sprayed by a skunk at some point in its life. That is why it is good to know how to remove this odor so it doesn't stink up your whole house.
Your first instinct to treat a skunky pet is probably to bathe it. Regular pet shampoo will temporarily mask the odor, but will not get rid of it completely. A number of pet products like sprays and creams also promise perfect results. Instead of lathering up with soapy shampoos, make this concoction with ingredients you probably already have at home.
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon dish soap
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
This should make enough for a small to medium sized dog, so double the recipe for a large dog. Use this mixture within one hour of making it, since it will lose its potency after that. Discard any extra solution.
This solution should not be applied like a normal shampoo. In fact, you should not wet your dog down at all before applying it. Put it directly on your dry pet and do not add water. Work it throughout the coat and into the skin, being careful to avoid the eyes, since the ingredients will sting. Use a washcloth to wash its face, since it may have been sprayed head on.
Leave the solution in your pet's fur for five to 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water. Afterward, you can follow up with a pet shampoo of your choice – Oatmeal & Aloe Vera Shampoo might be a good option since the anti-skunk odor solution might dry out your pet's skin. The shampoo will help nourish the skin again with moisturizing agents like aloe. Always reward your pooch after a bath with treats like Greenies for Dogs.
