Hair Loss Treatment for Dogs and Cats

Treating Hair Loss in Pets

Treatment for dog hair loss and cat hair loss treatment is specific to the cause. For example, if your pet has fleas, which is the number one cause of skin problems in pets, your veterinarian will recommend immediate relief and long-term relief. For immediate relief, comb your pet with a flea comb or bathe your pet with a pet shampoo formulated to kill fleas. For enduring protection, apply a topical flea treatment, such as Advantage II or Frontline Plus, that is incorporated into the skin oils to be slowly released for several weeks. All pets in the household should be treated so that no untreated pet can serve as a flea reservoir. You will also want to treat the house and yard because that is where over 95% of the flea population exists. For more tips on how to deal with a flea infestation, read our guide 4 Steps to Tackle a Flea Infestation

Treatment for skin disease should always include:
  • Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids
  • A diet full of antioxidants and phytonutrients from fresh meats and vegetables
Good sources of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are:

A healthy diet and Omega 3 and 6 supplements can help improve your pet's skin and coat health
