According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), approximately 62% of American households have dogs and there are approximately 78 million dogs as pets. Dogs are the most popular choice for families that choose to have a pet. As a result, dog supplies are often in high demand. Dogs need play time, exercise, regular grooming, and good nutrition to stay physically and mentally healthy, and there are many products to choose from. But how do you know which supplies are right for your dog? There are many breeds of dogs and the characteristics of your breed will help determine which supplies are the most appropriate for your precious pooch.

Train and play with your dog
There are a few basic supplies your dog will need. A harness and leash are essential. In addition to being excellent training supplies, they allow you to keep your dog nearby and safe. Play time is important for your dog's well-being also. Toys inspire play, which triggers development, so be sure that you buy your dog toys that will entertain him or her and also enable learning.

Groom your dog
Dog grooming supplies should be purchased according to your dog's needs. All dogs require grooming, but breeds with longer or thicker hair require more upkeep. Also, it might be a good idea to keep a flea comb handy, just in case. Trimming your dog's nails is another requirement and will need to be done on a regular basis. Always be careful not to cut too close to the "quick," which contains nerves and blood vessels that bleed easily.

Give your dog good nutrition
We know you want the best for your dog. Feeding your dog the right food, formulated for his or her age and weight, will help your dog live a long, healthy life. Your dog's dietary needs will change with age. Puppy food was your dog's first experience with dog food. It doesn't take long before your puppy will move onto adult dog food. As your dog reaches maturity, a dog food for seniors will help promote good health during the later years.

Tip

If you think you may want a dog for a pet, check your local shelter first. Shelter dogs are extremely loyal and you get the added bonus of knowing you may have saved a life.
