Question: I Made A Mistake When My Kitty Was Beat Up Really Badly By A Neighborhood Bully Cat This Morning. I'd Heard That With Careful Dosing, Dogs And Cats Could Have A Little Aspirin But I Didn't Have Any. After Scrubbing Little Toby's Wounds With Alcohol, I Remembered I Had Some Children's Pain Reliever With The Weight Chart On The Back, But It Was Acetaminophen Not Aspirin! The Smallest Children's Dose Said That 24-35 Pounds Could Have 1 Tsp (160 Mg), So I Thought He's About A Third Of That So I Can Use My Dropper And Give Him 1.5 Ml (just Under 50 Mg). That's What I Did And Then Thought, Duh, I Could Have Researched That On Line To Make Sure It Was Okay First! But I Hadn't, So I Went And Looked After The Fact. I Saw Several Places That Say Never Give A Cat Acetaminophen! I Rushed Him To The Vet Immediately And She Put Stuff In His Eyes And Forced Peroxide Over And Over And Over Again And He Never Ended Up Vomiting. This Poor Kitty Has Been Through So Much Lately. I Just Took Him Into My Home (stray), And In The Last 2-3 Weeks, He's Been Dewormed Because He Was Vomiting Them Up, Vaccinated, Neutered, Been On 2 Different Antibiotics For Wounds (now Starts A 3rd Tomorrow For The New Battle Scars...i'm Not Letting Him Outside Anymore, Even Though After Being Neutered Last Week, He's Barely Been Out Anyway...but This One Cat Gets Him Every Time No Matter How Short A Time I Let Him Out!), Has Been Sedated And Had An Abscess Lanced In His Foot From A Bite, And Now This. So Now That I've Made A Long Story Even Longer, My Question Is Do You Think, With Such A Small Dose, He Will Be Okay Even Though We Couldn't Get Him To Vomit? I Feel Soooo Bad For Having Done That To Him. I Mean, I Know Now That Cats Don't Have Whatever Is Necessary In Their System To Metabolize Acetaminophen, But The Places Where I Read About The Toxicity In Cats, They Described People Giving Their Cats Some Ridiculous Human Adult Dosage Like 325 Mg Or Something. For Crying Out Loud, Even If I Was Stupid Enought To Give Him Human Medication Without Checking First, At Least I Know You Don't Give An 8- To 11-pound Cat The Same Dosage You Give A 150-pound Human Adult Of Anything!!! So Do You Think He Should Be Okay? It's Been About 19 Hours Since He's Had That Little Dose, And He Seems Fine And Has Already Eaten Some Food (and Still Never Threw Up Even Though He Probably Had Over A Cup Of Peroxide Forced Down Him Today/yesterday...now 3:10 A.m...i Swear He Has A Cast-iron Stomach!). I'm Still Just So Worried About Him. :( Thanks. Answer: If He Is Ok Within A Day Or Two Then Likely Will Not Be A Problem, But I Would Have Vet Check Liver Function In A Few Days And If Normal Then You Are Likely Fine |
