How it works:

What is this medication used for:
Praziquantel is an anthelminthic (dewormer) used to treat tapeworm (cestode) infestation.

Availability:
Praziquantel is available as prescription tablets and injectable (Droncit) and non-prescription tablets (Tape Worm Tabs).

How this medicine should be used:
Praziquantel is FDA approved for use in cats. The usual dose of praziquantel, given as a one time dose, for cats and kittens over 6 weeks old is under 4 lbs give 1/2 tablet, 5-11 lbs give 1 tablet, over 11 lbs give 1 1/2 tablets. The tablets may be crumbled and mixed with food. Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended. It may be necessary to repeat the dose 2 or 3 weeks later.

What are the side effects:
Side effects are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness or diarrhea in dogs and increased salivation and diarrhea in cats.

What special precautions are there:
Praziquantel should not be used in animals allergic to it. Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

In the event of overdose:
Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. While rare, symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and salivation.

How should I store this medication:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Directions:

•	Tape Worm Tabs for Cats and Kittens is an over-the-counter (OTC) product.
•	Tape Worm Tabs for Cats and Kittens may be crumbled and mixed with food or given by mouth.
•	Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended while treating the pet.
•	A second treatment may be necessary.

Feline Tape Worms Tapeworm tabs for cats product review: One of the most frustrating problems seen by feline guardians is the often re-infestation of cats with tapeworms, which appear to animal guardians as tiny movable rice like segments often seen around the base of the tail of cats, near the rear door or in the stool itself. Since cats are such fastidious groomers, tapeworms are more of a problem in them over dogs in my opinion, as because they are so meticulous groomers, cats will often ingest fleas, which is how most pets get infected. While in most cases tapeworms do not make cats clinically ill, because of the risk to humans, it is important to rid your cat of these worms. For years we only had effective prescription medications for this such as Droncit. Now with this great generic product and same active ingredient, feline guardians now have a safe, effective and economic over the counter alternative to expensive tapeworm injections given at the vet or expensive prescription pills. THIS REALLY WORKS..BUY NOW!! I hate taking my cat to the vet for ONE butt worm pill! One she is old and hates to travel and second it's ridiculous to pay a vet fee then an expensive pill for something I KNOW all about because I have had my cat over 15 yrs and this is nothing new. I did some research online and ran across this pill. I called a friend of mine who is a vet in D.C. and told her the ingredients. She said it would do the job depending on how bad the problem is I might have to give her two. So on that I ordered the bottle. I gave my cat ONE pill and NO MORE BOOTY WORMS!!! What if my cat vomits after I give her the pill?

My cat tends to get sick because she eats too fast and will throw up afterwards. I am afraid I will give her this pill and she will just throw it up just as she did when I brought her home from the vet. What should I do?

If your cat vomits after taking the medication, it's likely the medication will not be absorbed. There is a topical dewormer available called Profender that available by prescription. Please discuss this product with your veterinarian.
