What is the most important information I should know about Slentrol: Slentrol is for
dogs only. It should never be taken by a human. Slentrol is a medication to help obese dogs
lose weight. It should be used as part of an overall weight loss program which includes diet
and exercise. Slentrol is a prescription medication available as a 5mg/ml oral solution in
20ml, 50ml, 120ml bottles with a oral dosing syringe.
What is Slentrol: Slentrol is an antihistamine. Slentrol is an MTP
inhibitor which works by preventing some of the fat the dog eats from being absorbed into the
body. Weight loss occurs because the dog feels full and eats less. When starting a dog on
Slentrol the usual initial dose is 0.0045ml/lb given by mouth once a day for the first 14 days.
After the first 14 days of treatment, the dose is increased to 0.009ml/lb given by mouth once a
day for the next 14 days (days 15-28 of treatment). Thereafter, dogs should be weighed monthly
and the dose volume adjusted each month, as necessary to maintain a target percent weight loss
of greater than 0.7% per week. The dose should not exceed the maximum daily dose of 0.09ml/lb,
based on the dog¿s current body weight, during any part of treatment.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Slentrol to my
pet: Tell your veterinarian if your pet is on long term corticosteroid therapy. Slentrol
should not be used in dogs with liver disease. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant
or lactating.
How should this medication be given: Give this medication exactly
as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand these directions ask the pharmacist
or veterinarian to explain them to you. Give Slentrol using the included oral dose syringe. The
medication may be given on a treat, with a small amount of food, or directly into the pet¿s
mouth. Do not use any other type of syringe with Slentrol. Store Slentrol in the original
container at room temperature. Do not get water in the bottle of Slentrol as it may cause
discoloration and allow bacteria to grow. Keep the syringe dry so that water does not get into
the bottle.
What happens if I miss giving a dose: Give the missed dose as soon
as you remember. However, if it almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the
missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose the pet: Seek emergency veterinary
medical treatment. Symptoms of Slentrol overdose that may occur include vomiting and loose
stools.
What should I avoid while giving Slentrol: Slentrol should not be
used in dogs less than 1 year of age. Slentrol should not be used pregnant or lactating animals
or animals intended for breeding. Pre-existing endocrine conditions such as Cushing¿s disease
should be managed before using Slentrol. Slentrol should not be taken by humans. Adverse
reactions with humans taking Slentrol include; abdominal distension, abdominal pain, diarrhea,
gas, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
What are the possible side effects of Slentrol: Slentrol may cause
vomiting, especially within the first month of treatment. Slentrol may also cause drowsiness,
diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Other side effects that may also occur include changes in liver
enzymes. You veterinarian may require periodic blood tests. Talk to your veterinarian about any
side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the pet.
What other drugs will affect Slentrol: Slentrol should not be given
to any pet that has been taking long term corticosteroid therapy.
Where can I get more information: Your pharmacist has additional
information written for health professionals that you may read.
