What is Revolution?

Revolution is a safe and simple monthly topical medication used to protect your pet from heartworms, fleas, and ear mites. It also protects dogs from ticks and sarcoptic mange and cats from roundworms and hookworms. Revolution for Dogs and Cats requires a prescription from your veterinarian. (3 Pack = 3 doses which lasts 3 months.)

For:

Dogs (6 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement), Cats (8 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement)

Benefits:
  • Protects your pet from heartworms and fleas
  • Fights both internal and surface parasitic infections
  • Treats Sarcoptic mange in dogs
  • Treats and controls ear mites
  • Controls American Dog Tick infestation
  • Treats and controls roundworms and hookworms in cats
  • Only administered once a month
  • Safe and easy to use
How it Works:

Revolution works by penetrating the skin and entering your pet's bloodstream. Concentrations of selamectin, the active ingredient, in the tissue and bloodstream prevent heartworm disease. Selamectin also redistributes into the skin from the bloodstream and kills adult fleas, American dog ticks, and ear mites, and prevents flea eggs from hatching. It is also an anthelmintic, which means it fights to expel parasitic worms. Parasites ingest the drug when they feed on the animal's blood. Revolution is safe for pregnant and lactating pets.

Cautions:

Side effects are uncommon, with less than 1% of dogs showing signs of digestive upsets. It is not advisable to use Revolution in pets that are ill or underweight. Collies and herding dog breeds may have a reaction to the ingredient selamectin if given over the recommended dosage amount. If your dog is a collie or other herding dog breed and your veterinarian has prescribed Revolution, we urge you to monitor your pet for 8 hours and call your vet if your dog displays any signs of weakness, staggering, dilated pupils, trembling, drooling, or pressing his or her head against a wall.

Brand Name:

Revolution (Zoetis)

Generic Name:

Selamectin (see-la-mek-tin)

What is the most important information I should know about Revolution:

Revolution is a prescription medication applied topically once a month. Do not use Revolution on puppies under 6 weeks of age or kittens under 8 weeks of age. According to the product literature, Revolution is safe for use on pregnant or lactating dogs and cats.

What is Revolution:

Revolution is a topical parasiticide applied once a month for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs and cats. Revolution is also used on dogs for the treatment or prevention of fleas, the American Dog Tick, ear mites, and canine sarcoptic mange. When used on cats it is also used to treat or prevent fleas, ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms. It is recommended that heartworm prevention be used year-round. Revolution may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before applying Revolution on my pet:

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication.

How should this medication be used:

Apply Revolution exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Revolution is available as unit of use applicator tubes containing the specific amount of medication based on the weight of your pet. Revolution is available as a 15mg/0.25ml puppy/kitten dose for puppies older than 6 weeks and kittens older than 8 weeks weighing up to 5 lbs. Revolution is also available for cats 5.1-15 lbs (45mg/0.75ml), 15.1-22 lbs (60mg/1ml), and for dogs 5.1-10 lbs (30mg/0.25ml), dogs 10.1-20 lbs (60mg/0.5ml), 20.1-40 lbs (120mg/1 ml), 40-1-85 lbs (240mg/2 ml) and 85.1-130 lbs (360mg/3ml). For dogs over 130 lbs use the appropriate combination of tubes. The entire contents of the tube should be used. Do not split the contents as the accuracy of the dose and effectiveness of the medication cannot be assured. Bathing or shampooing your pet 2 or more hours after treatment will not reduce the effectiveness of Revolution. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss applying a dose:

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose the pet:

Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose, while rare, may include salivation and lack of coordination, as well as symptoms listed below as side effects.

What should I avoid while using Revolution on my pet:

Because humans can contract hookworms from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on your pet and in the household and to not feed your pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended. Do not use on sick, weak, or underweight animals. Do not apply to wet hair. Dogs should be tested for heartworms prior to using Revolution. In humans, Revolution may be irritating to skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after applying Revolution to your pet.

What are the possible side effects of Revolution:

Side effects of Revolution that may occur include temporary hair loss at the site of application, loss of appetite, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and muscle tremors.

What other drugs will affect Revolution:

Do not apply Revolution to your pet if already giving an alternate heartworm medication. When switching from another heartworm medication, begin Revolution when the next dose of the heartworm medication is due.

Where can I get more information:

Your pharmacist has additional information about Revolution written for health professionals that you may read.

Revolution is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1801.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I have been using Revolution monthly for Misty, my 9 year old Shitzu, for the past 5 years. She was diagnosed with liver disease and I have to be careful with food and medication. She is doing very well and I am very happy with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Used to work great Been using Revolution for years and it had been great. Now all of a sudden we have fleas! I don't care what they say, your pet can become immune to the stuff. Vet has recommended changing to something else. Disappointed as I have 5 months left of product that no longer works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never Fails I have been using Revolution for my Maltie, Tina, for 5 years. Never a flea or tick, also protects her from heart worm. The price and service at 1800PetMeds is the best.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from does not work I used revolution on my 2 yo cat for about 6 months and it didn't work. I took him to the vet and she said his flees were very very bad. I was giving him revolution on a monthly basis. The vet said she's seen a lot of cats that don't respond effectively to revolution. That being said, it seemed to work better (but not perfect) for my older cat. It's worth spending a bit more for a more effective med.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Revolution doesn't stink like Advantage I was so glad to find Revolution years ago. With 5 cats their monthly application had the house smelling awful. Revolution has little or no smell and my vet said it's just as good as Advantage.

Q&A

how do you hold a cat to apply tick meds

Asked by: Diane knott
I recommend that you wrap the cat in a towel to hep control the claws and a second person to actually hold the cat while the first one applies the medication topically to the back of the neck, more towards the head so the cat is unable to reach it to lick it off. Doing this just before bedtime also allows the medication to spread properly and dry before anyone is tempted to pet the cat at the application site.

How long does it take to kill fleas

Asked by: Cattyann
Ticks are difficult to kill, taking around 24 hours once the tick has bitten to die. Tick-borne diseases usually require a tick to be attached for 48 hours to transmit the disease.

Do I have to have a veterinarian's prescription or can I buy online

Asked by: Kiki
Revolution requires a veterinarian's prescription but you don't need to have a physical script. When you place your order, provide your veterinarian's information and PetMeds will send a fax to your vet for approval.

2 questions.... is cat and dog revolution the same aside from the weight requirements and does it treat tape worms?

Asked by: Courtney1234
The active ingredient is the same for both the dog and cat revolution. It is the amount that varies depending upon the species and the weight of the pet. Revolution does not treat tapeworms for either species.

Can I give revolution for cats to my dog?

Asked by: Dog person
It would depend upon the strength of the cat Revolution and the appropriate dose for the size of your dog. Besides the Puppy/Kitten size, only the cat Revolution for 15-22 pounds is equal to the dose in the 10-20 pound dog Revolution. Otherwise, the amount of the active ingredient is not appropriate.
