How it works:
The ingredient amitraz is an antiparasitic drug. It rapidly paralyzes the ticks mouth parts before killing the tick, preventing attachment of the tick and preventing the transmission of disease. Cautions:
The Preventic Tick Collar contains Amitraz, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), and should not be used on pets being given any other MAOI such as Anipryl or selegiline. Humans taking MAOI medications or who are diabetic should use this product with caution and should wash hands thoroughly after applying the collar. didn't work Our dog is on Revolution, which protects against everything but ticks, so we needed something for ticks. I got the Preventic collar. Our dog has had it on since the beginning of April (supposed to be effective for 3 months), and here it is mid-May, and we have found 5 ticks total (3 were engorged) on him. Ironically, they were all found close to the collar (one behind his ear, one above his eye, and one on his neck). None were on his abdomen or hind quarters. One of the ones that was found, but was not embedded yet looked like it could have been a deer tick. 05/12/2011
Highly Recomended I have been using this collar on my dogs for 10 years now. I recomend this highly! 03/19/2011
Really Worked for Us We were having a terrible problem with ticks. We had tried fogging and spraying the yard. Different shampoo's. Over and over again. I have three dogs, small, medium and large so it can get pretty expensive. I ordered these collars as a last resort and within 48 hrs we were not having the problem anymore. I will be ordering them again and again to keep it under control and it is affordable. 03/17/2011
Length vs. Dog Weight??? Collar does not fit my Bassett who is only 47 lbs. 04/11/2014
Have used for years I recommend this product highly. I have had several different dogs over the years and have used Preventic collars all those years on all my dogs. Never a tick and they have never had a flea either. They last longer than mentioned also, I leave same collar on start spring though summer. 04/01/2014

Thank you for your question. No, this would not be safe as the collar releases medication onto your furry pal's skin.

I have Bernese Mountain Dogs, one has an extremely thick coat. I hesitate to buy this product because I dont think I would be able to get it to rest on his skin. Does the product have to make contact with skin to work?

Answer:
The collar will need to make contact with your dogs' skin in order to be effective. The manufacturer recommends checking periodically once it's put on to make sure that contact is still being made.
