What is Heartgard Plus Chewables?

Heartgard Plus is a real-beef chewable tablet for dogs that provides protection against heartworms, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. Heartgard Plus is given monthly and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (6 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement)

Benefits:
  • Considered the most tasty heartworm chewable tablet (beef flavor)
  • Effectively controls heartworms, roundworms & hookworms
  • Only given once a month
How does Heartgard Plus work?

Heartgard Plus contains ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used to prevent heartworms. Heartgard Plus also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, an anthelminthic, used to prevent roundworms and hookworms.

Studies have indicated that certain dogs of the herding breeds are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels due to the MDR1 gene. Dog breeds that may be affected include Australian Shepherd, Australian Shepherd Mini, Border Collie, Collie and English Shepherd.

Cautions when giving Heartgard Plus:

Heartgard Plus can cause sensitivities in herding dog breeds. Heartgard Plus chewable tablets should be chewed, not swallowed whole. The tablets may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Make sure that your dog eats the entire dose. It is important to give your dog Heartgard Plus every month year-round. Do not skip winter months as your dog may become infected. If you miss than two months of dosage, please consult with your veterinarian as to whether to continue medication.

Brand Name:

Heartgard Plus (Merial), Iverhart Plus (Virbac), Tri-Heart Plus (Intervet)

Generic Name:

Ivermectin, Pyrantel pamoate

Who makes Heartgard Plus?

Merial

What are the active ingredients in Heartgard Plus?

Ivermectin, Pyrantel

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Heartgard Plus to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication, any of its individual ingredients, or to beef.

How should Heartgard Plus be given?

Give Heartgard Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Heartgard Plus chewable tablets must be chewed. They should not be swallowed whole. Use with caution, Collies and other herding dog breeds have been known to have adverse reactions to ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels. Heartworm testing should be performed prior to the start of prevention therapy. If the animal is off Heartgard Plus for 6 months or less, start the medication and test after 6 months since microfilaria, that take 6 months to mature, will result in a positive test result. Store Heartgard Plus at room temperature. Do not remove the tablet from its wrapper until ready to give the medicine. Keep this medication away from children and pets. In addition, Heartgard Plus has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs including pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies aged 6 or more weeks.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Heartgard Plus?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What should I do if an accidental overdose of Heartgard Plus occurs?

Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment.

What should I avoid while giving Heartgard Plus to my pet?

Because humans can contract hookworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Heartgard Plus?

Side effects of Heartgard Plus are rare at the recommended heartworm prevention dose. Higher doses in dogs may cause tremors, dilated pupils, and loss of body weight and death.

What other drugs will affect Heartgard Plus?

Do not give Heartgard Plus to your pet if already taking another heartworm medication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ASSURANCE INSURANCE Heartworms is a preventable ailment which has caused the death of so many pets. Heartgard gives me the assurance that I have done all I can to insure that my dogs are protected which is MOST comforting. The side benefit is that they quiver with anticipation because they LOVE that little morsel. I have to stand over the dobie and whatchamacallit to insure that nothing drops for the other to snatch. ;-) I have used this product for 30+ years and still rely on it to cover my loved ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well & Tastes Good I've been using Heartgard for years. My Rottweiler-mix took them and now my pit bull mix takes them. They do work well without making my dog(s) sick at his stomach. And they must taste good because my dogs have always really liked them. I just say "Want a treat?!" and they take it from me. They can also be broken in half and I give half at a time to my dog. It's easier for them to chew and they don't try to "inhale" it like they do other treats or food. I think the price is very good for the quality of protection I get. I'll continue using heartgard.

Q&A

I always mark when my dog is due her next dose but didn't and now not sure if I gave it to her. Thinking I didn't but not certain. Should I wait until she would get it next month?

Asked by: Cathy53
Hello Cathy, Thanks for the question. If you are really not certain that you gave her the medication, you should wait until her next month dose. With Heartgard, it is not recommended to double the dose as serious side effects can occur. If you happened to give her the medication twice, I would consult with your veterinarian right away. Sometimes keeping a calendar/alarm in your phone or something can help with remembering to give her the medication or writing down how many chewables are left each time. That way you know how many are in the package and how many she has had. Hope this helps. Thanks, Pharmacy student intern

My 60 lb female lane just ate 6 tabs for 50 to 100 lb dogs.

Asked by: Johnm
She should be fine. Heartgard Plus has been tested at a much higher dose given daily. You dog may be nauseous but that should pass.

My dog has been taking Heartguard Plus for the past 5 months without any problems& I want to keep him on it.What more can I give to this 12 lb dog that will also protect him from fleas, ticks, mosquitoes,& yellow flies? We live in a southern/rural location.

Asked by: DSWK
K-9 Advantix topical will help with fleas, ticks and has some mosquito repellent action and you can use Flys-Off for the biting flies. Nexgard and Simparica are tablets that are also good for fleas and ticks instead of the K-9 Advantix but won't help with mosquitoes but the Fly-sOff may help in that area as well.

Will Heartguard also kill fleas on my dog?If so how long before it starts killing them?

Heartgard Plus does not kill fleas. You need a separate product such as Nexgard. Advantage II or Frontline to kill fleas.

Does Merial uphold their product guarantee if my pet gets heartworm and/or any other intestinal parasites if I buy through pet meds and not my veterinarian.
