Clemastine Antihistamine

Clemanstine
This relatively newer antihistamine over the past several years has come under recent favor of use by many veterinarians in treating seasonal inhalent/contact allergies, which often causes excess itching of ears/skin and paw licking, as well as secondary bacterial and/or yeast infections, which are often frustrating and expensive to treat. As I mention under my product reviews for diphenhydramine and chlorphenirimine, it is always preferable to first try antihistamines in these allergic pets, rather than stronger drugs like cortisone which can sometimes have short and long term side effects in some pets. As discussed in detail under my other antihistamine product reviews, the overall effectiveness of antihistamines is 25% in my experience in alleviating symptoms, and sometimes one antihistamine will work in one pet and not another. That is why I will often do a 2 week trial with one antihistamine, before changing to a different one, if symptomatic relief is not adequate . As also discussed in these product reviews, antihistamines often work best when combined with other supportive measures like topical shampoo therapy with 1800petmeds oatmeal and aloe vera shampoo or hydrocortisone shampoo, along with fatty acid supplementation and supplementation with antioxidants like proanthozone from 1800petmeds. Several years ago I attended a veterinary seminar by a dermatologist from Cornell veterinary school, touting studies with clemastine showing higher efficacy than other antihistamines, especially when combined with fatty acid supplementation. However in my experience and opinion, I have not found clemastine to work more effectively than diphenhydramine or chlorphenirmine in general. Every pet is an individual, however, and so sometimes various antihistamines must be tried as mentioned here, to see which one is most effective in an given pet. My overall rating of this product is a 3.5. Its efficacy is a 3.5. Its ease of use a 5.

Allergy relief
My older lab had such bad allergies she was itching until she was bleeding. She was up all night which meant I was up all night. Then her dermatoligist put her on prednisone and clemenstine. What a mircle...a difference within 1 day. She is now off prednisone and 1/2 tab twice a day and her allergies are under controll!!!!!!!

Finally something worked
My minature poodle scatched so much that he kept me awake at night. I tried everything. Benedryl did not even phase him...Finally my vet recommended Clemastine Antihistamine and finally some relief. He still licks his paws but the constant scratching and itching has stopped. If Benedryl does not work, try Clemastine.

This seemed to help Skipper;s itching and biting some but not sure of the long term use. It does make him sleepy, which stops the biting etc.

AnswersAnswer: Thank you for your question Marley, there is no weight requirement for this product so you would want to following the dosing instructions:Pet Weight Dosage Dogs/Puppies: All weights 1/2 – 1 tablet every 12 hours Cats/Kittens: All weights 1/2 tablet every 12 hours AnswersAnswer: You may use clemastine long term for itching if the itching is caused by allergies; however, there are side effects associated with this drug such as drowsiness, dry mouth or hyperactivity. The dose for dogs of all weights is 1/2 to 1 whole tablet every 12 hours, I would start with 1/2 tablet first and increase dose if neccesary.
the only thing that seemed to really help for my dog was predisone but the vet will not let him be on it anymore so im trying to find something else in replace to predisone that will help my poor "buddy" that is non-prescription.
